A Textbook for the Beginning Masochist

i scar myself to paint portraits of you
to pay my respects
building altars on flesh
ever reminding the reader
where i left my heart
wear neckties to hide
the scar the noose left behind
as i finger the wound
and smile with pride
for a shy crowd applause as a job well done
it hurts more to swallow on open roads
near the throne of the sun
even after all these years
i still wash the bathroom floor
every night at eleven
the pain will never leave
these stains are permanent
these scars stay the night
as a candlelight vigil
i scar myself to paint portraits of you
it takes skill to wield a blade like a smile
every night at eleven
this is just for starters
