Leddy Center's Into the Woods

Mysterious Old Man:  "They disappoint, they disappear, they die, but they don't.  They disappoint, in turn I fear.  Forgive, though, they won't . . . Like father, like son."
The Baker encounters the spirit of his Father in the woods, and is cautioned by his Father to reconsider his actions before he ends up like him.

Cinderella:  "If this is how you behave as a Prince, what kind of a King will you be?"
Prince:  "I was raised to be charming, not sincere."
Cinderella, having discovered her husband's infidelity,
makes a decision to leavehim.
Cinderella:  "My father's house was a nightmare; your house was a dream.  Now, I want
something in between.
Please go."

"Sometimes people leave you halfway through the wood.  Do not let it grieve you--no one leaves for good."
Cinderella consoles Little Red Ridinghood, whose entire world, her mother and grandmother included, have been destroyed by the giant's wrath.

The Baker expresses his uncertainty about raising his child on his own, and is comforted by the spirit of his dead wife.
Baker:  "Maybe I just wasn't meant to have children."
Baker's Wife:  "Don't say that!  Of course you were meant to have children."
Baker:  "But how will I know how to be like a father with no one to mother my child?"
Baker's Wife:  "Just tell him the story of how it all happened; be father and mother--you'll know what to do."
Baker:  "Alone?"
Baker's Wife:  "Sometimes people leave you halfway through the wood.  Do not let it grieve you; no one leaves for good ... Hold him to the light now; let him see the glow.  Things will turn out right now; tell him what you know."
Baker:  "Once upon a time …"

"Careful the spell you cast--not just on children.  Sometimes the spell may last past what you can see, and turn against you."
The second act finale (above and left) rejoins all the characters--alive and dead--to warn the
audience, and themselves, that "Children will listen."

All:  "Into the woods and out of the woods and happy-ever-after!"
Cinderella:  "I wish!"
