Chapter 7

A few days later, Jason picked Lucky and Carly up from school. As they walked up the pathway to the house, Jason spotted the front door wide open. Why would Virginia leave the door open? Jason asked.

Jason, Lucky and Carly walked into the house and got a shock of their life. Virginia was lying on the floor dead and Damion was standing over her pointing a gun right at them. Hello, Damion said smiling coldly at the three some. Welcome home!

Mother! Carly said looking down her mother with tears in her eyes. Jason was looking at the gun wondering if he could shove Carly and Lucky out the door before this guy fired.

Luke sleeping on the couch. Laura was mending one of Zanders shirts for the hundredth time and Roy was reading the paper listening to the radio when the news came on. A riot in New Yorks State prison ended today with one death. Local Mob Boss, Frank Smith was found stabbed to death. So, far there was no word on an arrest for his murder.

So, his luck finally ran out, Luke said as he sat up.

I guess, Roy said wondering what this meant for the world of the underworld.

What about Lucky? Laura said thinking of her son at this time. What if Franks men just killed him that is if he was alive?

Luke smiled at his wife and said, Dont worry about the kid. Hey, it might help get clue where he is. Luke started to doubt Lucky was alive. He just never had the heart to tell Laura that.

Take what you came for and get out, Jason said using his body to protect Lucky and Carly.

Damion laughed and said, What brave little boy? To bad you have to die. Damion lowered the gun and pointed at them. Carly lost it. She started screaming out of control and charged Damion. Damions shot went wild giving Jason time to jump the guy. While Damion and Jason were fighting, Lucky grabbed his baseball bat and hit Damion right on back of the knees. You little brat, Damion yelled as he fell. Lucky didnt just glared at the guy and hit him again. Damion fell to the ground hard.

Nice, Jason said stepping back. He looked over where Carly was sitting as she rocker her mother back and forth. Mommy, Carly said in a little childs voice. Wake up. Jason went to her and tried to get her to her feet. Lucky in the mean time knew they were in trouble. Damion wasnt alone. His gut was telling him that and that meant they had to get out of there. Lucky ran into his bedroom grabbed his backpack from under the bed and his bear from the top of it.

Lucky then ran out back into the living room to see Damion start getting back up and heading for his gun. Jason, he isnt dead! Lucky yelled.

Jason pulled Carly to her free and before Damion mind could get working again. The three some ran out of the house and jumped into the car. Jason pulled out of the drive with Damion right on their tail. Damions men pulled up then and their boss jumped into the car. Get them!

Carly sat in the front seat crying. Lucky looked out the back window to see the car coming right after them. Jason, head towards the freeway, Lucky ordered.

Why? The police station is just down the block, Jason said.

Cant. You dont know if Damion hasnt bought them. I know a cop that cant be bought, Lucky said not turning around at all. He had to keep an eye on the guys behind them. He didnt know if they would fire on them with others around or not. He couldnt take that chance.

Buy them? Lucky what is going on? Jason asked puzzled.

Ill tell you later but first we have to loose these guys. Head for the East Coast, Lucky ordered Jason. Jason didnt know why but he took Luckys word on things. He pulled on to the freeway and headed East. Where he was going he didnt know but had a feeling Lucky did. He just hoped the kid knew what he was doing.

It took them while but they finally lost Damion and his men. They were in West Virginia heading towards New York. It was late and Carly had finally drifted off to sleep. Her mind wasnt working at this moment and Jason was starting to worry about her. She had taken the real Carlys death hard. Seeing her mother dead like that could drive Caroline over the edge for good. The other problem he had was why they were driving towards New York in the first place. Lucky sat in the back seat keeping his eyes behind him waiting for who ever had been chasing them to catch up. Kid? Jason said finally.

Yeah, Lucky said turning to face Jason.

Ok, out with it. What is going on? Jason asked.

Lucky sighed and leaned forward. He looked at Jason and said, Well, for starts that guy back there name is Damion Smith, his father Frank, chased my family all my life. He tried to kill us several times. One day, Damion showed up and I was taken away from my family. He took me to Virginias house. Lucky went on to tell Jason his story.

Jason listened and got a better picture of the way things were. Virginia had a part time job but managed to house and clothes not only herself but Lucky and Carly as well. She even managed to talk the courts in turning him over to her custody. No single mother could do that unless they had the right pull; a mob boss would be that pull. Then it hit him. Frank! Carlys father name is Frank!

I thought that myself, Lucky said smiling.

But why would he kill her? Jason asked.

I dont know. Maybe he didnt. Maybe Damion did! Lucky said.

Ok, I get that now. Why are we going to New York? Jason asked.

Lucky smiled. My father always told me if I ever got into trouble go to Robert. Robert would take care of me. I figured having Franks men after me again is trouble.

Who is Robert? Jason asked.

Robert Scorpio, he was my dads best friend, Lucky said sadly. Jason nodded and realized why Lucky was so mature of his age. He had to be running from the mob all those years.

Dont worry, kid. Jason said smiling at Lucky. Well get to New York.

I know, Lucky said and he looked down at Carly. They will help her there.

Lets hope so, Jason said and he drove on into the night.
