Chapter 6 Three years later. Laura was cleaning the house when Zander, Roys sixteen-year-old son arrived home. Aunt Laura, Dad and Uncle get back yet? Zander asked. No, and I dont think they are going to any time soon. Ford called and said there was a mix up in the trial. It is going to take longer then they first planned, Laura said. Luke and Roy had worked for the FBI together now for three years now. All the cases they went on, not one dealt with Frank Smith or her son Lucky. Ford kept on promising that they would find Lucky soon but she was giving up hope. He was either covering up Luckys death to protect her or he knew and he was never going to tell her. I hate Ford, Zander muttered. I dont like him myself but I would rather put up with Ford then Larken, Laura said smiling. She didnt like either agent. In fact, she hated the entire FBI. Luke wasnt an agent. He was puppet. He did what Ford wanted to do without argument at least as much Luke could do. Come on, help me finish cleaning and then we will go out for supper, Laura said smiling at the teen. Zander nodded. Laura was a bit to mothering for him sometimes but then again he realized how much she missed her son. So, he put up with it and hoped one day he would Lucky and get to know the kid. ********************************* In Florida life went on for Lucky was well, he became part of Virginia and Caroline family. I should say Carly. Because two mouths after Luckys arrival, Caroline and Carly were walking down the street and a drunk driver served hitting the girls. Caroline lived but Carly didnt. Caroline, the doctors say is suffering from survivors syndrome. She never thought highly of herself and thought she was the one that should have died. She took Carlys name to keep part of her friend alive. The other change in their lives happened just a few mouths ago. Jasons foster parents got sick of him and turned him back over to the state. Carly threatened to run away if her mother didnt get her friend back. So, with one phone call to Frank in prison. Jason became part of their family. Jason and Carly both think Luckys parents died in a car wreck. Lucky never said anything to change their minds. He realized that his father was dead and he had a feeling he would never see his mother again. He would hold on to a dream that one day he would make Frank pay, until that day happened. Lucky lived his life with the Bensons. Jason, Lucky said as he leaned against the car watching as Jason fixed his car. Jason had worked all summer for that car but it was now his. It did cost him a lot to keep it running but at least it was his. What is it squirt? Jason asked. What are you going to get for Virginia for her birthday? Lucky asked. Tomorrow was Virginia birthday and Carly was throwing her mother a surprised birthday party. I dont have much to give her. How about we pool our money and we can get a better gift, Jason said smiling at Lucky. He knew Lucky had been working hard to save his money for this day but how much money can a kid make mowing lawns. He also knew it was import to Lucky to get a good gift for Virginia, after all not many women would take in two kids that werent her own. Cool, Lucky said smiling. I only have eighty dollars and the gift I would love to get her cost twice that amount. Jasons jaw dropped opened. I need start mowing lawns, He said smiling. Thats my gig besides Im cute, Lucky said smiling and he walked away. Jason shook his head and smiled. Lucky told him once that his mother said he got his mouth from his father. The more Jason was around Lucky. The more Jason wanted to meet Luckys father. He must have been a real character from the clues his son leave behind. Lucky helped Jason finish fixing his car then they left to go by Virginias present. Jason didnt have a clue what Lucky wanted to get by anything had to be better then a dumb sweeter he was going to by her. *************************** The same day of Virginias birthday party. Luke and Roy came home. Laura took one look at Luke and flipped out. Lukes arm was in a sling. What happened? she demanded rushing to her husband. Im ok, Luke said giving Laura a quick kiss. Laura didnt buy it one bit. She knew Luke well enough to realize he was hiding something. What happened? she asked again a little forcefully. Roy smiled at his son and said, Lets go into the other room. Sure, Zander said looking at his aunt and uncle. He had feeling there was story there and he was hopping his father would give it to him. Well? Laura said standing with her arms crossed glaring in Lukes direction. Luke sat down in the chair in the kitchen and said, I got shot. You what? They didnt call me? When did it happen? How are you? Laura asked all in the same breath. Angel, calm down, Luke said grabbing his wifes hand and guiding her into a chair. Im fine. They didnt tell you because I told them not to. I didnt want you to worry. Besides, it is only a flesh wound. It looks more then flesh wound. Where was your back up? Laura demanded. Larken was our back up, Luke said bracing himself for the explosion. I know it! That man is going to get you killed. Im call Ford and give him a piece of my mind, Laura said and she rushed off to phone in the kitchen. Luke did try to stop her but Laura was too upset to be stopped. Ford picked up his phone and ever before he got hello out of his mouth. Laura started in on him. Yes, Mrs. Spencer. I know Mrs. Spencer. It will happen Mrs. Spencer. this were the only words that Ford could say for ten minutes. When Ford hung up he looked at Larken and said, I have some advice for you and that is to avoid Laura for the next few days. Larken laughed and said, Im not scared of that woman. I dont know why you put up with her. Why dont you just cut her loose? Ford looked at Larken and asked sarcastically, Larken, do you want Laura to pick the White House with a sign reading the FBI kidnapped my husband? She wouldnt, Larken said. Dont count on it, Ford said as he got up to get a file out of his cabinet. Bad enough, Im keeping the whereabouts of her son from her. If she finds that out, God help us. You sound like you are scared of her? Larken said shocked to hear this from Ford. I am and you should be too. Luke and Laura both are not as easy to control as Roy was. They dont scare like he does and if they get their kid back. They will vanish on us, Ford said and he opened the file to the latest pictures of Lucky with Jason, Carly and/or Virginia. As he added the latest pictures they had and closed the file. You are turning weak, Larken said to Ford. Ford laughed and said, You arent using your brains. Luke and Laura give a damn about themselves. In fact, if they bought their kids death. We could lock them up for life all they would care. They are doing this because of the hope of seeing him again. He is the key to controlling them. Then why do you leave him with that woman? Larken asked. Because I think that woman has something on Frank. Smith does anything she wants at moments notice. She has something and he worried about it. So worried, he gives her the world, Ford said and closed the door on the file. *************************** Virginia sat in her living room surrounded by her kids, her friends and co-workers. You surprised? Carly asked her mother. Very, Virginia said smiling. Virginia had opened all the gifts but the ones from Carly, Lucky and Jason. She took Carlys first and started to cry. Carly had gotten her a day of pampering at one of the local spas. Thanks, Virginia said kissing her daughter. I thought you earned a day of rest after dealing with us all the time, Carly said hugging her mother. I love it, Virginia said smiling brightly. She then picked up Lucky and Jasons present. It was the runts idea, Jason said smiling sheepishly. Im sure Ill like it, Virginia said smiling at Lucky. Luckys present was a mothers ring with Carly, Lucky and Jasons birth stones in it. Virginia looked up at Lucky in shock. If it wasnt for you, I dont know what would have happened to me. You might not be real mother but youre the next best thing, Lucky said and he hugged her. Same here, Jason said and he hugged her as well. He normally didnt show to much emotion in front of a lot of people but if it wasnt Virginia he would have ended up in the system again and for that he owed her a lot. More then he could ever repay her. Virginia cried as she hugged all her children. They might not be her blood but she loved them just the same. Chapter 7 Frank's Request |
