| Chapter 17: Kevin walked into Luke's room later the next day and found him exactly where the staff said he would. Luke was standing at the window with his hands clinched at his side. "I heard you had a bad night last night. How you feel?" Kevin asked as he walked into the room. Luke didn't turn around or even acknowledge Kevin's presents. "Luke?" Kevin called out when he didn't get a response from Luke. Kevin walked into the room and stood beside the unmoving figure. "Look at me?" Kevin begged the man. "You ever have a dream that was more then a dream?" Luke asked finally but he still didn't turn around or look in Kevin's direction. "Do you want to talk about it?" Kevin asked him. "You wouldn't believe me," Luke said. "I'll believe anything you say," Kevin said, "You just have to trust me." Luke turned and looked at Kevin then with a cold cynical look on his face. "Ok, but you are the one that asked," Luke said and he sat down in the chair at the table and placed his clinched fits on top of it. "Last night Attila got the best of me." "I heard. I should warn you. The judge finds out about your little outings and you could loose Lucky for good," Kevin warned him. "Kevin, I'm not worried about judge or any one on this planet right now. I know some one else that could make my life a living hell if I ever hurt him again," Luke told him. Luke unclenched his right hand and rubbed it across the knuckles of this left. "What are getting at?" Kevin asked as he tried to figure out where Luke was going with this. "Last night, I had dream that was more real then any dream I ever had in my life. I was shown things that I did to my son and I forced to watch it. It wasn't a memory because I saw the after math. I saw Lucky hid his room-trying figure out who in hell I was and where the father he knew and loved went. Laura was my guide during this time and the hate and discuss I saw in that woman's eyes burned at my heart, but she stop there. She ripped a door open that I slammed shut long ago and on the other side was my mother. My childhood was night mare and swore that my kids weren't going to understand that night mare but Lucky does now and I hate myself for it." As Luke talked he rubbed his hand harder and harder. Kevin looked at figure in front of him and wondered how Luke kept it together. Then realized the link held him together was dead and all of what he was doing sense was result of loosing Laura. "What was your childhood like?" Kevin asked hoping that Luke would talk about it. He had a feeling that the key to Luke's actions was in his past. "The first eight years was night mare. I dealt with the streets easier then I did with my own father. He would come home drunk and beat my mother or me. Then the next day he say, he was sorry and tell us it wouldn't happen again, but it did over and over again. But then he finally went to far and killed her. I tried to stop him but what can eight year old do to stop and adult. I even pulled a gun and told him to stop. He thought I was joking and never dreamed I would pull the trigger," Luke told him. "Did you?" Kevin asked. "Yeah, but not on propose. He grabbed the gun and it startled me. I just let go of the trigger. All those years ago, I thought walked out on us but it was story that my mind bought. Last night, I was finally told the truth or showed it. Tommy DiLucca, my best friends father, heard the shot and showed up not long afterwards. I was trying to wake up my mother but it was to late. She was all ready dead. He had to yell at me to get me to talk. I finally told him what happen he took of the rest. Dad and him were in the local mob and Tommy made some calls and the organization did the work. They cleaned the mess and my mother buried like a true lady. As for my father, he was dumped in an unmarked grave. I was told that he left and I bought it. I didn't remember shooting him. I blocked all of it out. We were taken to live Aunt Ruby in Florida," Luke said as he tried to figure out what all of this meant. "Luke, you do know that it was accident. Don't you?" Kevin asked him. "Yeah, I know that and that isn't what I'm thinking about. Kevin, I promised Laura that I would stick around and fix what I did wrong. If I leave, she hunt me forever and Lucky has a chance to turn out like me. She loves me but doesn't want our to be like me," Luke told him. "What are going to do?" Kevin asked. "I'm going to get Lucky to give me his hate. I know in him. All I have to do is push just a little more and I have it. I just hope that afterwards he can forgive me," Luke said his voice cracked at the possibility that Lucky would hate him for life. "He'll forgive you. Lucky loves you and that is what is keeping him going. What I'm worried about is how you are going to do it?" Kevin asked him. "Can I see Lucky?" Luke asked. "Now?" Kevin asked getting more and more worried as time went on. "Yes, now." Luke said "I think I can set it up but what do you have in mind?" Kevin asked him. "I'm going to get Lucky to face what I did to him and I promise what ever happens I'm not going to lay hand on the kid," Luke told him. "Ok, but I want to be near just in case things go wrong," Kevin told Luke. "Fine with me," Luke said and he got up and went back to the window. Kevin realized that Luke was done talking and he was told to go in the most polite manner Luke could come up with. Kevin didn't argue and he walked out of the room to go set up the meeting between father and son. Luke stood at the window for a long time and finally he opened his clinched hand. In his hand was Laura's wedding ring, a ring that Luke put on her hand himself the day they placed her in the ground. It was Laura way of telling him that last night wasn't a dream and that she meant everything she said to him. Chapter 18 Back to Monster Within |
