| Chapter Ten Lus birthday. Luke sat in the breakfast table looking at the clock. All he had to do was get this day over with. He knew it was going to be bad but not this bad. The pain hit him the second he woke up and he couldnt shake it. Lucky walked in and looked at the food on the table. Im not hungry and to tell the truth I didnt want to wake up today, Lucky said. I didnt either. We have to face this day, Cowboy and you know it, Luke told him. I know. When are we going to see her? Lucky asked. I was thinking around two. Bobbie and Ruby are going with us. You want to call Nikolas and ask him. You can. Luke said. I all ready did. I just didn't know the time. Lucky said. Ill see you at the club then. I have some work to do until then, Luke said and got up and left. Lucky watched him go and hoped he wouldnt get drunk. Not today anyway but he couldnt blame him if he did. How do you celebrate your daughters life in a graveyard. Lucky called Nikolas and they decide to go to Rubys for lunch and then the club. Lucky spent the morning alone thinking of what Lulu would have gotten today. Nikolas finally arrived and they left. I would have come over sooner if I would have know you were alone. I thought Luke was here. Nikolas said. Hes at the club. Dont worry about it. I need time to clear my head. Lucky said. They went to Rubys and sat at the counter. Bobbie walked in with Amy and Lucas. The women sat down on either side of them and they ate lunch. Ruby had to threaten Lucky until he finally ate. About two oclock the group headed to the club. Luke was sober and Lucky was surprised. He was working on some paper work and trying to forget about what he was going to do. I ordered flowers for them. We have to pick them up before we go. Luke said and got to his feet. You eat? Ruby asked. Im fine Aunt Ruby. I ate part of a sandwich. Lets just get this over with. Luke said and they left. ~~~~~~~~~~~ At the graveyard, The group stood around the markers looking down sadly at the little one between Laura and Leslie. Lucky and Nikolas pulled weeds and cleaned them up a little bit. They placed the flowers down and stood looking at the sight for long time. Luke placed a little teddy bear on the ground and said, Here you go angel. Happy Birthday. He wiped tears away from his eyes. Bobbie and Ruby put arms around him. It will never get better. I still miss BJ on her birthday. You just learn to live with the pain. Bobbie said. I know. I learned that one on my own. Thanks for coming today. I dont think I could have done this one alone. Luke said. The group left a little while later and headed back down the hill. Lucky and Nikolas looked at the grave one more time before climbing into his car. Im sorry Nik for acting the way I did before they died. I just wish it didnt take loosing them for us to realized it, Lucky said. I do too. Nikolas said as they pulled away. Chapter 11 Go back to Goodbye Valentine |
