| Chapter Ten Lucky was led into the stables with a blindfold over his eyes. Stefan was leading the boy by the hand. It is all right, I just have a surprise for you, he said, in a comforting tone of voice. When Lucky was standing in front of one of the stalls, Stefan removed the blind fold. Lucky looked up and saw a full-grown horse standing in the stall where his pony used to be. I decided it was time for you to get a new horse. Youre way too big for a pony. I hope you like him, Stefan said, leaning over Luckys shoulder. I love him. What is his name? Lucky asked. He doesn't have one just yet. You need to name him, Stefan told Lucky. Lucky thought about calling him by his real name but the trouble it would have caused wasnt worth it. So, Lucky looked over the sleek black horse and said, Smokey! Smokey? Why would you name a black horse that? asked Stefan. Promise you wont tell? Lucky asked. I promise, Stefan told him. The thing I remember most about my father is the smell of smoke. It is a way of keeping him around, without causing too much trouble. I would call him Spencer but Stavros would not like it, Lucky said, wincing at the thought of Stavros' reaction. Youre right. He wouldn't like it and besides, I like Smokey, Stefan said, giving the boy a hug. Lets go riding. Stefan and Lucky saddled the horses and headed down the path. They stopped at one of the cliffs over looking the bluff and Stefan turned to Lucky. I think youre old enough now to know something about your parents and I want this to remain between us. Just like Smokey. All right. What about my parents? Lucky asked, a little concerned. You remember the men that chased your parents? Stefan asked. Yes, Lucky said. You do remember the movie we watched about a man framed for the murder of his wife? Stefan asked. Yes, Lucky said. It was cool! Well, about a week after we saved you and your parents, the man that wanted to hurt them planted something on your parents and the law thinks that they were smuggling illegal items. They have been in jail ever since. They didnt want you to know and if there was contact between you and your parents, the man who is out to hurt them will come after you. We have been lying to you because of your age. I think now you are old enough to understand everything. We have been trying to get them out but the courts have kept overruling our appeals, Stefan told Lucky, hoping this lie was enough to keep Lucky from losing his parents love. You mean, they are in prison and I can cant go see them because of this man? Lucky asked. Yes. Im sorry we lied but you understand why? Dont you? Stefan asked him. Yes, I understand and Im glad you finally told me the truth. How long are they going to be in prison? Lucky asked. Stefan had to think about that and finally said. They might be there until you turn eighteen, but after that they are coming for you and they do love you. We havent told them about Stavros because we dont want them to worry, Stefan explained to Lucky. Who else knows? Lucky asked. Only, Helena and Alexis. We are keeping the truth from Stavros because he would send you away and put you in danger. Helena is the one who keeps Alexis and me up to date. She was the one that brought you here. Stefan said. Lucky leaned close to Stefan and hugged him. Thanks. Now everything makes sense to me and I wont tell anyone, Lucky said. Chapter 11 Return to Cassadine Revenge |
