| Chapter Twenty Three Lucky sat on the porch listening to the cars drive by and realized that he was getting used to being blind. He was starting to feel more comfortable walking around the house and didnt feel like he was making a fool of himself all the time. Monicas tricks of moving around were working. He couldnt believe that he remembered almost every step from one place to another and holding his arm across his chest helped keep him from feeling like he was going to ram his face all the time. He just wished his mother would let up a little. She was getting on his nerves wanting to help. Lucky knew she meant well but he had to learn how to take care of himself. He didnt want to feel like a burden the rest of his life. Emily Quartermaine walked up the walk and stepped on the porch. Lucky looked blankly in her direction and asked, Whos there? Its me, Emily said. Hi, Em. What are you doing her? he asked her. I came to see if you wanted to go to Rubys for Lunch. My treat! she said. Sure, Why not? Lucky said, as he got up. Ill go and tell mom. We might have to take one of Jasons men. I cant go anywhere without them because the Cassadines are up to something, He explained. I have one with me. Jason is worried about my safety, too. Dont worry Im used to the company, she said with a laugh. Lucky smiled at her and felt around for the door handle. She fought the urge to help him. Nikolas told her and Robin to let Lucky do things for himself. He was only going to learn how to move around on his own, if he did things for himself. She hated to watch him struggle with something as simple as opening a door but she knew Nikolas was right. Lucky finally got the door open and walked inside. He yelled out. Mom. Laura looked up from Lukes bookwork and said, Lucky dont yell all the time. Im not always on the other side of the house. Whats wrong? Em and I are going Rubys for Lunch. I just thought I would tell you and before you get on my case, Im sick of the house and need some air. So, Im going, Lucky said and turned completely around and headed out of the door. Laura watched him go and shook her head. She looked at Caine who was the fixing the light switch that she had bugged Luke to look at for weeks, Am I smothering him too much? she asked him. You do try to do everything for him, Mrs. Spencer. How about waiting for Lucky to ask to for help, Caine suggested. It's hard. I love him and I hate to watch him struggle on simple things, Laura said. You could hurt him more. Luke called Kermit to help Lucky defend himself. Im going to also help him with everyday life. You would be surprised what you can see without your eyes, Caine said. I saw you this morning with Lucky and you got him to laugh. I havent heard that sound in a long time. Lizzie meant a lot to Lucky and he still mourns her and maybe he always will. I want to thank you and the others for you help. I would hate to think what could happen to Lucky without you all, Laura said. Caine walked over to the table and sat down. Mrs. Spencer, why are you and your family fighting the Cassadines? he asked. Laura looked at him and wondered where to start. While she was getting Caine caught up on the Spencer-Cassadine War. Lucky and Emily were at Rubys eating at the counter when a group kids from school walked in. Lucky you going back to school yet? Emily asked. Yes. Im going back Monday. I havent learned Braille or anything else. Monica found a tutor that's going to teach me. Until then, Im going to use a recorder in all my classes. And Mom got all my books on tape, Lucky told her. Im glad. I missed having you in class with me, Emily said. They sat and talked for awhile when the conversation at the table to their right drifted into earshot. Did you here that? Lucky, coming back to school. I would crawl in to a hole before my face anywhere if I was blind, One girl said. Tell me about it! I hate looking at his face and his eyes. He used to be so good looking now. He is just a freak, the other girl said. Lucky dropped his fork on the counter and sat frozen. He knew the scars from the burns were bad. His parents were waiting for the doctors to say when he could have surgery to help cover them up. He normal wore sunglasses but he left them at home. Now, he wished they would have went back for them. Ruby heard everything and walked over to the table of girls and said, Get out of my place. You have no right to saying anything about my nephew. Dont worry about the bill just get out. They looked at her in shock but didnt say anything. They got up and quickly left the restaurant. Lucky, dont listen to them. Your scars will heal and you are the best looking Spencer man I have ever met, she said leaning over the counter and kissed him on the check. There are only me and dad. It's not much of a comparison, Lucky said trying to laugh but failed. He knew she trying to cheer him up but he also knew the girls were right. He was a freak. He knew Em and everyone else only felt sorry for him and that was the only reason they were nice. Em take me home. He got up and moved slowly toward the door. He waited outside for her. While he was waiting, Helena Cassadine walked up and started in on him. Hi, Lucky. I didnt suspect to see you out at least not without someone holding your hand, Helena said. I dont need anyone to hold my hand, Helena. I can move around just fine. He felt his watch to find out what time it was and then felt for the sun. When he got his directions down, Lucky started to move toward home. He didnt want to stick around with Helena being there. Helena watched him walk down the street. She smiled an evil smile and thought, Im glad you lived. I am going to have fun toying with you while your father is in jail and when he gets out, Im going to make him watch as I slit your throat. Helena forgot about Lucky then and moved on her way. She had to find a place to stay and God forbid, a job. She was still fuming about Stefans remark about her going to work for a place called McDonalds. He was going to stay with Alexis until this all got worked out but Helena was on her own. Emily and Jasons bodyguard walked out of Kelleys and looked around for Lucky. He wasnt anywhere in sight and Sam got the feeling he was dead man. He quickly opened his cell phone and called Jason. When they got connected, Sam took a deep breath and said into the phone. Jason, I lost Lucky Spencer. He had to hold the phone away from his ear. Jason was yelling and that wasnt a good sign. Emily grabbed the phone and said, Jason, stop yelling. It wasnt his fault. Lucky had run in with a group of snobs from school. They got him upset. He most have walked off to prove he could do something by himself, she told her brother. Em. Give the phone back to Sam, Jason told her. Emily handed him the phone and Sam smiled at her for trying. Jason waited for a second and asked, Sam, are you listening to me? Yes, Sam said. Good. I am sending out more men to look for Lucky and Im calling Mac Scorpio. Dont let Emily out of your sight for one second while you both look for him. Anything happens to Lucky and Sam, you are dead man, Jason hung up and looked at Sonny. Sam, lost Lucky Spencer, Jason said to his partner. He what? Sonny snapped. Im calling all the men and Mac. Then, we both will go look for him. They were eating lunch at Rubys. Well start there and move outward. I promised him anything happens and he is dead, Jason said dialing the phone. I might kill him myself. Lucky is blind and barely knows how to move yet. He does good on his home turf but in this town by himself I hate to find out what kind of trouble he could run into, Sonny said and pulled his own phone out to call Mac.
