Chapter Nine

Come on man. Tell me where we are? Lucky asked as his friends guided him
along.

If you listen you might find out. Robin said.

Lucky started to listen the things around him. He heard running water to his
right and some strange little cries to his left. Suddenly, it hit him. The park
by the stream and I think something is wrong. Lucky said.

What? asked Emily.

Over to the left, I hear something crying. It is faint but strong. Lucky said
removing his cane and heading in that direction. When he got closer he went to
his knees and started to feel around. Robin helps him move some brush out of the
way and they found three little kittens snuggled together for warmth. Nikolas
and Emily found the mother dead over by some bushes.

They are going to die. They were just born hours ago. None of them will survive
long. Robin said sadly.

Lucky reached out and slowly picked up one. Is there anything we can do? Lucky
asked. The kitten was snuggling in hands.

They need food. I dont know anyone who has a cat let alone one who had just
had kittens. Robin said.

I know one. Emily said suddenly and she picked up one of the kittens. Mrs.
Hardy's cat just had them last night. Monica told me this morning. Maybe we can
ask her to take them.

Count me out. Lucky said holding out the kitten.

Why? asked Robin.

She would rather see them dead then do anything I ask. Lucky said. They have
a better chance without me.

She wouldnt let four little kittens die because of you. Im sure she will take
them. Emily said.

I dont know. Lucky said getting to his feet.

Nikolas helped Lucky to the car while the girls bundled up the kittens. Then the
foursome went to find Mrs. Hardy.
