Chapter Thirty One

Stefan was buried in the Port Charles Cemetery. Nikolas wanted him close and
didnt think that Stefan would have wanted to be buried along side the others.
Luke kept his word and no one outside the little group knew that Stefan wasnt
Nikolas uncle. Helena tried but no one was listening to her any more. Kermit did
give her back her money just so no one could say the trial wasnt fair. The
trail began just weeks after Stefans death and Luke wasnt about to miss any of
it. He was determined to see Helena pay for her crimes.

The day before the trail Audrey Hardy walked up to the Spencer house. Lucky was
the porch listening for different sounds and trying to tell each one apart. He
walked up him and said, Hi, Lucky.

Mrs. Hardy. Hi. How are you doing? he asked her a little nervous at what she
wanted. Every time he ran into her she had only venomous words for him.

I come to say Im sorry and I was wrong to blame you for Lizzies death. I want
to give you something to help you remember her by. I have two things for you but
one is from me, she said and placed Lizzies teddy bear on his lap. I think
she would want you to have it. The next thing startled Lucky. The kitten
squirmed in hands and mewed very softly. This is the only kitten from the
litter you saved that I couldnt find a home for and I thought of you. She is
blind in one eye and needs a lot of love. I think you two were meant for each
other.

Lucky pet the kitten and was thinking of a way to keep Foster from having it for
a snack. Foster walked up right then and sniffed at the kitten. Lucky said,
Dont even think about it. You know what happens to dogs that eat cats. They go
to hell, Lucky said to him. Thanks, Mrs. Hardy. I will always love both of
your gifts and Im sorry about Lizzie. I loved her, too. Lucky told her.

I know you did but I didnt understand it until now. I have go to work. Take
care of yourself and the kitten, Audrey said and walked away suddenly.

Lizzie stood by and watched the two of them with a smile on her face. She bent
down and looked right at Foster, You try it and you are not going to like what
happens, Lizzie said and then vanished from view. Foster snorted at her and
walked away from the kitten.

Lucky walked into the house holding the kitten and the bear very gently. Lulu
loved both of them but took the kitten from her brother. What are you going to
name her? she asked him.

Lizzie. Lucky said with a smile.

The trial went under way and Dara was flawless. Dara called the examiner of all
the victims, the cops on the cases, and a lot of experts but it was Lucky that
brought tears to everyones eyes. His words put Helena over the edge and lead
her to her death. Lucky walked into the courtroom and walked slowly to the front
of the room. He placed his hand on the side and counted the rows until he got to
Daras table. The bailiff helped him the rest of the way to the witness box and
placed his left hand on the bible. You swear to tell the truth the whole truth
and nothing but the truth? he asked.

Yes. Lucky said softly. Lucky sat down and starred straight ahead. He wore
sunglass to cover his eyes and waited for Dara to begin.

Lucky before I ask you some questions. I want you to take off your sunglasses
and put you hands up so the jury can see you scars, Dara said and helped him to
do as she asked. Ladies and Gentlemen. I want you to get a good look at him.
Lucky didnt have these until Mrs. Cassadines tried to kill him. I all ready
proved that she ordered his death now Im going tell you the after affects from
that order. Dara helped him put the sunglasses back on and face the front.

Lucky. Tell the court about the last day Lizzie and you were together? Dara
asked him afterwards.

We were watching the sunset. Everything was just right. The sky had been a deep
blue that day and not a cloud in it. The sun was just about to disappear when
the train derailed. Suddenly the world exploded, I heard Lizzie scream and place
my hands up to face to protect it. I woke up later in the hospital and nurse
there told me about the accident. I was at Mercy General but they transferred me
to General Hospital. It was my parents that told me about her death and the fact
I was alive because she was in front of me and took most of the explosion,
Lucky said and tried to fight the tears but failed.

Dara stopped and helped him calm down. Luke watched as everyone broke down at
the sight of him and starred coldly at Helena. He saw her death not too far away
and almost enjoyed it but it took Lucky taking the stand to do it. Dara looked
at Lucky to make sure he was ok and then started again. Lucky are you ever
going to see again? she asked him.

No. My retinas were burnt from the explosion and there is nothing anyone can do
to help. My scars will go away but after a lot of surgery and time. Nothing is
going to bring my best friend back to me. I loved Lizzie with all my heart and I
never got a chance to tell her while she was alive, Lucky said sadly.

Dara didnt have any more questions and Helenas lawyer was smart enough not to
even try. Lucky got slowly down and the bailiff helped him to where Luke was
waiting for him. Lucky sat between Luke and Laura. He was trying to get calm
down but was loosing the fight. The judge called a recess and Laura took Lucky
from the courtroom to help him calm down.

The judge wrote a number on a card and ordered the bailiff to give it to Luke.
It was a number for a school in New York for the blind. Luke looked up at the
judge who left for his chambers but the judge didnt look back.

The judge sat at his desk and looked at a picture of a girl around Luckys age.
She was blind and his daughter. She was born that way. He was trying to mange
dealing with a child that suddenly lost their sight and pity the parents. He at
least was ready when she started to walk around for what laid ahead. They didnt
even know anything at all to help him.

Dara closed her case two weeks into the trail and Helenas lawyer took only one.
The jury took longer than both of them. They talked for four weeks and the
longer it went on the more frighten everyone one got that Helena might get off.
They did finally reach a decision and everyone was there to hear the verdict.
Lucky was nervous. He sat next to Laura and held on to her and for dear life. If
Helena walked they were all dead and he knew it.

The judge asked, Have you reach a verdict?

Yes your honor we have, a juror said and handed a piece of paper over to the
bailiff the judge read it and gave it back and the juror read the paper. We the
jury find Mrs. Helena Cassadine guilty of all charges and order she should be
put to death by the gas chamber.

Everyone cheered at the news. Luke looked at Helena with a smug look on his
face, but got cold as she was taken from the room. Helena brought her hand up to
her throat and ran a finger a cross it, but what got him was that in her hand
was a four leaf clove, the symbol of luck. He knew without a drought in his mind
that she was threatening to kill him. Lucky would never be safe as long as
Helena Cassadine was alive.
