The different types of cards for

Home | MTG News
There are a number of different types of cards with different values and uses. Some are good at some times, some better at other times. This is different from the different types of "land" in Magic the Gathering. It will be explained later in the section.

Were to look to find out what type of card it is You can look right in between the card art and the effects of the card. There is a little strip that tells you what kind of card it is. This is true on all cards exept on unofficial cards. Here's an example:

Creatures Creatures are probably the most common type of card in the game of Magic. They can attack, block, get enchanted by other things, and manipulated by the opponent (under special situations) and yourself. (Of course.)

Creatures have a "power" and "toughness" number on it. In combat, if one creature's power goes other or equals another creatures toughness, the weaker creature goes to the graveyard or the out-of-game zone, depending on the circumstances. Here's an example:

<--I know is blurry; is a 2/2, which means it has 2 "power" and 2 "toughness".

Creatures can also damage your opponent directly if no other creature blocks it or any other card blocks it. Then the creatures power is subtracted from his or her opponent's life total.

Instants Instants are great and are very special because you can use then anytime, even on your opponent's turn. However, you can't you them on your or your opponents upkeep. Upkeeps and other phases of the game are explained in the section, Phases of the Game.

You can use them in combat, on your turn, your opponents turn, whenever, just not on any upkeeps.

They are also good for taking you opponent by surprize. They don't know what is in your hand, so they don't know it's coming. But, vise versa is also possible, so stay ready.

Instant's effects only stay in effect until end of the turn. (Unless said otherwise.)

Enchantments Enchantments are almost the same as Instants except you can only play them on your turn and can stay in play for a long time. It can only stay in play for an extended period of time if it says some on the card.

Note: Only creatures have "power" and "toughness". No other card can have it. By the way, The "power" number is on the left and the "toughness" number is on the right. For example: If the card says 4/5, the power is 4 and the toughness is 5.

There are also card with "Enchant Creature " or "Enchant Land" or something like that. These enchantments enchant something, not just are "in play".

"Land" Land is what makes it possible to play all of the above and all of the below. Its the building blocks of the the game of Magic. Here are some Pictures of all the different types of "basic land".

<--Its a GREEN LAND. <--Its a RED LAND. <--Its a BLACK LAND.

<--Its a BLUE LAND. <--Its a WHITE LAND.
