The Greek language was in use for centuries before the era of recorded history. The oldest Greek script which has been found is the so-called Linear B (1500 BC). Research on that script indicates that the Greeks were a literate people many hundreds of years before the period of the first known Greek poet, Homer who probably lived in the 9th century BC).
