Από πού είσαι;
Where are you from?
In this lesson you will learn how to ask where people are from, find out their nationality and tell them yours.
Look also Grammar 3 and 4.
Nikos and Maria are talking about themselves and their friends.
- Από πού είσαι, Νίκο;
Where are you from, Nikos?
- Είμαι από την Αθήνα. Είμαι Αθηναίος. Εσύ;
I am from Athens. I am an Athenean. You?
- Και εγώ είμαι από την Αθήνα. Είμαι Αθηναία.
I am from Athens as well. I am an Athenian.
- Και η Κατερίνα είναι Ελληνίδα, έτσι δεν είναι;
Katerina is Greek as well, isn't she?
- Ναι, είναι Ελληνίδα. Και η Ελένη και ο Γιώργος είναι Έλληνες, επίσης.
Yes, she is Greek. Eleni and Giorgos are Greek as well.
- Από πού είναι;
Where are they from?
- Είναι από την Θεσσαλονίκη και οι δύο.
They are from Thessaloniki, both of them.
από = from
πού = where
και = and
You will have seen that question words or "interogatives", as they are known, such as πώς; πού; τί; have an accent. this is not to indicate where the stress falls (see Pronunciation Guide) but to show that the word is being used in a question, not in a statement. You will find them used without accents in statements.

Notice the lack of the personal pronoun.
Είμαι από την Αθήνα.
NOT: Εγώ είμαι από την Αθήνα.
I am from Athens
When you want to say "I am from Athens as well" you can do it in two ways:
Και εγώ είμαι από την Αθήνα
Είμαι από την Αθήνα, επίσης
If you want to say "Katerina is from Athens as well":
Και η Κατερίνα είναι από την Αθήνα
Η Κατερίνα είναι από την Αθήνα, επίσης
Αθηναίος = a man from Athens
Αθηναία = a woman from Athens
έτσι δεν είναι; = isn't he? / isn't she? / Isn't it?
και οι δύο = both of them

NATIONALITY
To say your nationality or someone else's, use the words είμαι, είναι, είμαστε, είναι as you did to identify people, and add the nationality description:
Είμαι Άγγλος = I am English
Είναι Αμερικάνα = She is American
Είναι Έλληνας / Ελληνίδα = He / She is Greek
Note that the ending of the nationality word must change according to the gender of the person described. It also changes if you are talking about more than one person:
Είμαστε Γάλλοι = We are French
Είναι Γερμανοί = They are Germans
Here are a few examples with the masculine, feminine and plural forms:

EXERCISE 1:
Say where you are from.
Say that you are English (or whatever).
Say that you are not Greek.
Ask Niko if he is Greek.
Ask Maria if she is Greek.
Ask Maria where she is from.
Ask both Nikos and Maria where they are from.
Ask Nikos and Maria if they are from Athens. (What will they answer?)
Ask Nikos and Maria if they are Greek. (What will they answer?)
Say that you and your companion are English. (or whatever)
Say that you and your companion are not Greek.
EXERCISE 1 ANSWERS:
Είμαι από την Αγγλία. (or any other country)
Είμαι Άγγλος.
Δεν είμαι Έλληνας.
Είσαι Έλληνας;
Είσαι Ελληνίδα;
Από πού είσαι;
