Πώς σε λένε;
What is your name?
A: Πώς σε λένε;
What is your name?
B: Με λένε Ελένη. Εσένα;
My name is Eleni. What's yours?
A: Με λένε Αντρέα.
My name is Antreas.
Γ: (pointing at A) Πώς τον λένε;
What is his name?
Δ: Τoν λένε Αντρέα. (pointing at B) Εκέινη, πώς την λένε;
His name is Antreas. That girl over there, what is her name?
Γ: Την λένε Ελένη.
Ηer name is Eleni.
πώς = how
λένε (verb λέω) = they say, they call, they name
The exact translation of the phrase "Πώς σε λένε;" is "How do they call you?". This is the most common way to ask someone's name. Another way to ask the same question is by saying:
Πώς είναι το όνομα σου;
What (how) is your name? (όνομα = name)
The answer to that is:
Το όνομα μου είναι ...
My name is ...
Observe the use of the words με, σε, τον, την, μου, σου. We will see more about them in a later lesson.
εκείνη = that girl (woman) over there (pointing)
εκείνος = that man over there (pointing)
εκείνο = that child (or object) over there (pointing)
In general we use the word αυτός -η -ο for someone (something) who is close and the word εκείνος -η -ο for someone (something) who is far away.
When you talk about a person who is present is not polite to use the word αυτός -η -ο. Instead people use the words εκείνος -η -ο even if that person is standing right next to them.
