Το σπίτι
The house



In this lesson you will learn how to form
simple sentences in Greek.
Look also Grammar 1 and 2.

Το σπίτι είναι μεγάλο
The house is large.

Η πόρτα είναι ανοιχτή.
The door is open.

Ο κήπος είvαι πράσινος.
The garden is green.

Οι κουρτίνες είναι ανοιχτές.
The curtains are open.

Τα δέντρα είναι πράσινα.
The trees are green.

O/H/To = The

είναι = He/she/it is - They are

In Greek there are 3 genders. Masculine(m), feminine(f) and neuter(n):

μεγάλος(m) - μεγάλη(f) - μεγάλο(n)
ανοιχτός(m) - ανοιχτή(f) - ανοιχτό(n)
πράσινος(m) - πράσινη(f) - πράσινο(n)


Always use the definite article before the noun:

To σπίτι(n)
H πόρτα(f)
O κήπος(m)


Ο κήπος είναι μεγάλος.
The garden is large.
Ο κήπος είναι πράσινος.
The garden is green.

Η πόρτα είναι ανοιχτη.
The door is open.
Η πόρτα είναι πράσινη.
The door is green.

Το σπίτι είναι μεγάλο.
The house is large.
Το σπίτι είναι πράσινο.
The house is green.

    ξένος(m) - ξένη(f) - ξένο(n) = foreign, foreigner
    γλώσσα = language
    ένας = one, a
    κόσμος = world
    ολόκληρος(m) - ολόκληρη(f) - ολόκληρο(n) = entire, whole




    Did you know that?
    According to the Webster International Dictionary the total of the word stock of the English language is 166,724 words, out of which 41,214 are Greek. On the other hand, A. Konstandinides, in his remarkable work “The Greek Words in the English language”, argues that the whole of the medical terminology in English amounts to 43,716 words, out of which 20,346 are Greek.

    This is the advertisment for a private school teaching English.
    Its name is Όμηρος (Homer).
    Greek texts:
    Τα Αγγλικά δεν είναι ξένη γλώσσα. = English is not a foreign language.
