Grammar 8:
Forming a sentence II
Keeping in mind wat we have learned in Grammar 7, let's write in Greek the phrases "Mary talks to the wolf", "Mary lives in Athens" and "Mary stays in the house".
Rember that σε = in, at, to
The most obvious way to write these phrases would be:
Η Μαρία μιλάει σε το λύκο. (WRONG)
Η Μαρία ζει σε την Αθήνα. (WRONG)
Η Μαρία μένει σε το σπίτι. (WRONG)
In Greek, though, σε and το(ν)/τη(ν)/το merge:
σε + το = στο
σε + τον = στον
σε + τη = στη
σε + την = στην
So the correct way to say these phrases would be:
Η Μαρία μιλάει στο λύκο.
Η Μαρία ζει στην Αθήνα.
Η Μαρία μένει στο σπίτι.
