Grammar 7: Forming a sentence
The usual form of a sentence is:
Subject | Verb | Object |
Mary | reads | a book |
The cat | eats | the mouse |
I | love | you |
(who?) | (does what?) | (to whom?) |
When a noun is the subject of the sentence we use the definite and indefinite articles we've learned in Grammar 1.
Example:
Η γάτα τρώει το ποντίκι.
The cat eats the mouse.
Μία γάτα τρώει το ποντίκι.
A cat eats the mouse.
This is called the Nominative Case of the noun.
When a noun is the object of the sentence things change slightly.
Example:
Masculine nouns
ο λύκος - το λύκο (notice the loss of the final s)
Η Μαρία τρώει το λύκο.
Maria eats the wolf.
Feminine nouns
η Μαρία - τη Μαρία
Ο λύκος τρώει τη Μαρία.
The wolf eats Maria.
Neutral nouns
They stay the same.
το ποντίκι - το ποντίκι
Η Μαρία τρώει το ποντίκι.
Maria eats the mouse.
When the noun begins with a vowel or 'κ', 'π', 'τ' we add an 'ν' just because it sounds better! Remember, Greek needs to "flow" at all times.
Example:
η Αθήνα - την Αθήνα
ο οδηγός - τον οδηγό
η κότα - την κότα
η πόρτα - την πόρτα
η τούρτα - την τούρτα
Remember: Neutral nouns stay the same at all times.
το άστρο - το άστρο
Singular |
Masculine | Feminine | Neutral |
το λύκο | τη γάτα | το σπίτι |
Plural |
Masculine | Feminine | Neutral |
τους λύκους | τις γάτες | τα σπίτια |
That was the Accusative Case of the noun.
