CURRICULUM VITAE

Prof.
Leão Rodrigues
Amadeu Leão Rodrigues
Amadeu Leão Rodrigues was born in Anadia, Portugal, in 27 of November 1939. He received the Dipl. Eng. Degree in Electrical Engineering from the High Technical Institute (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1968. He also received the M.Sc. degree in Power Systems and Electrical Machines (awarded a mark of distinction) and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering, both from Imperial College of Science and Technology, London, in 1973 and 1983, respectively. For his Ph.D. work he received a National Scientific Research Institute (INIC) Fellowship. During his military service he spent two years in the Portuguese Navy as a second-in-command officer of a patrol boat in the colonial war.
From 1969 to 1976 he was Lecturer in the Electrical Engineering Department of the University of Luanda, Angola, where he taught electrical machines theory and design. He then joined the New University of Lisbon where he became Associate Professor of Electrical Properties of Materials at Science Materials Department of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology. In 1987 he became Head of the Department.
From 1988 to February 1990, he was invited to be Chief of Staff to the Secretary of State for Science and Technology. From 1990 to 1996 the Portuguese Government appointed him as National Coordinator of the NATO Science for Stability Programme as well as National Administrator of the NATO Science Fellowships Programme. For his job in NATO Javier Solana awarded him. In 1992 he followed a one year Defence Course in the National Institute of Defence of Lisbon.
Currently, he is Professor of Electromagnetism and Electromagnetic Devices in the Department of Electrical Engineering of the New University of Lisbon where he is involved in teaching and research activities, mainly in Special Electrical Machines using Superconductors Materials. He is a Consultant of a NATO Science for Piece Project in the area of Superconductivity running in the Moscow Aviation Institute, Russia. About sixty scientific papers in the area of materials and electrical machines have been published on Conferences proceedings and specialised magazines.
