WILLIAM HATHAWAY OF VIRGINIA

W illiam 1
Hathaway of Virginia was born in 1636, near Stratford, England, and died in Lancaster Co., VA 1692.  It is believed that he married Letitia Lawson on a ship enroute to America; that he inherited a share in English property; and that he later returned money to England.

William Hathaway's first deed was from William Downing in 1666.  William Hathaway Chapman, a direct descendant of William Hathaway of Virginia, has reacquired "Enon Hall", an early Hathaway home, which originates from the family line of William Hathaway of Virgina.  William 3 Hathaway purchased the property that became Enon Hall on September 10, 1762.  William Chapman has established the
Enon Hall Website, where he is covering much of its early history and some of his plans for restoration of the home.

Several branches of this family have passed along a story that William of Virginia had more than one son and that at least one went to Massachusetts and another to either North or South Carolina, however, we have proof of only one son:
William 2, was born in 1666 and died at Enon Hall in 1725. To our knowledge, no records have been found of his marriage, nor of how many children he had.

William 3, was born in 1695 and died in 1772.  His will was recorded in Lancaster County, VA, 16 Jan. 1772. He married Sarah Lawson, the daughter of Henry Lawson, between 1730-1732.

They had eight children, for whom we have descendant data.  To view the third and fourth generations of descendants, click
