| . HENRY VIII : Birth: 1491 Death: Jan. 28, 1547 British Monarch, son of King Henry VII. Henry VIII ruled from 1509 to 1547. He was both ruthless and brilliant leading his nation into the Renaissance age. He is famed not for his brilliant leadership qualities but for his bloody ruthlessness. He desperately wanted a male heir, and married six times to secure this objective. He had two of his wives executed and divorced two more. He refused to let anyone stand in his way, including the Pope. When the Pope refused the divorce of Catherine of Aragon, Cardinal Wolsey, a close aid of Henry's who had run England for him for twenty years, failed to change the Pope's views, and Henry ordered the execution of Wolsey in 1530, saving him from being put on trial. Henry later made himself head of the English church instead of the Pope, pronouncing his own divorce. Between 1536 and 1539, Henry, along with minister Thomas Cromwell, closed England's monasteries and took their wealth. |
