| I grew up in a small town in Idaho, Mud Lake. Yes, Mud Lake (and it does have a web site). To help you understand how small -- until I was in high school, we only had to dial four numbers if we needed to call anyone else in Mud Lake. Yes, a small town. Just us and the cows. I graduated from BYU with Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Physics. I am currently a student at the University of Iowa, finishing my Ph.D. in Speech Science. With my background in Physics and my love of computers, I now examine and create computerized models (using biomechanics) of the human vocal system. "What good is that?" you ask. Basically, research in this field helps not only to uncover less invasive surgical methods for vocal health issues like cancer, but to also better rehabilitate the voice after surgery. We also get to do fun things like helping musical performers adjust how they use various aspects of their vocal system to maximize their vocal performance. Away from my work, I love basketball and computers. And computers. And computers. |

| I was born in Michigan, but I lived most of my life in Belton, a small town outside of Kansas City, Missouri. I guess I should rephrase that -- next to Eric's "small town" Belton is a booming metropolis. Like Eric, I graduated with my bachelor's and master's degrees from BYU. But there the similarities end -- Eric is a scientist through and through. I studied English, Linguistics, and TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language). After graduating from BYU, I moved to western Massachusetts and taught at a boarding school for a year. I then moved into Boston and worked as a communications specialist for an energy company -- don't ask me how that relates to TESL; I don't know. I just found a job at the University of Iowa -- HURRAY!! I will work with a geriatric research project -- I know, the information is sketchy, but I haven't started yet. When I'm not at work, I love to cook (and Eric's waist is beginning to show the signs, poor thing). My hope is to someday take a culinary class. I also love going to plays and reading -- yes, I'm still an English major at heart. |
