"convince us of our errors of doctrine, if we have any, by reason, by logical arguments, or by the word of God, and we will be ever grateful for the information."
- Orson Pratt, The Seer, p. 15 (1854)

Orson Pratt sounds like a wise man doesn't he? He claims to be a man of reason, of logic, and a man of God. In point of fact, he was a Mormon apostle during the mid to late 1800's. He joined the Mormon Church in 1830, becoming a member of its council of twelve in 1834 and one of its twelve apostles in 1835. His other accomplishments include being professor of mathematics in the University of Deseret and writing several important books on the subject of mathematics. He was a member, and several times speaker, of the Utah House of Representatives. Among his LDS writings may be mentioned Key to the Universe (1866), and The Bible and Polygamy (1870). Do today's Mormons follow Professor Pratt's philosophy? The answer is no.

The Book of Mormon itself makes claims that disqualify itself as a valid reflection of history in early America, and there is virtually no historical or archeological evidence to support the claims that have not been dis-proven. The contradictions between The Book of Mormon and the Bible are well documented and easy to find (see The Truth About the Bible). The simple answer is that the Book of Mormon (and so in turn the entire LDS faith on which the Book of Mormon is based.) has no foundation in tangible and/or conclusive fact.

Do todays Mormons face this challenge with reason? with logic? do they yield to the 'Word of God'? Are they 'ever grateful for the information.'? Again, no. After their prepared defenses are exhausted, they fall back to their final stronghold. I know it is true. I have the testimony of the Holy Spirit telling me its true. They have a feeling that it is true. No reason, no logic.. A feeling.
