The probably toughest Road Race ever conducted. The Rally also known as the 'Marathon de la Route' was driven non-stop on rural roads from Liege in Belgium through the Alps and on the infamous "Autoput" in former Yugoslavia to Sofia in Bulgaria where the teams were allowed to rest for one hour before they drove back. Later the route was changed to Rome and when races on public road were prohibited the race was carried out as a 1000km or 96 hour race on the Nürburgring track in Germany. Nowadays it's a Historic Rally. Other classic car events like this are: Liege-Istanbul-Liege, Paris to Beijing(Peking) and London - Sydney |

This race also took place before World War II on the new German "Autobahn" and Italian "Autostrada". BMW and others have built special streamline bodies on their chassis. A prominent sample is the prototype based on a Volkswagen chassis for the 1940 race that never took place. This vehicle designed by Prof. Porsche was the "grandpa" of all production Porsches. |

Organized by the Automobile Club of Sicily between 1912 and 1958 the GIRO DI SICILIA has known 18 editions and became one of the most enervating car rallyes the world had ever known. Because of it's long standing and extremely various and demanding track, the GIRO is still remembered as one of Italy's most important car races to be held on open roads. The chosen route, the "little Circuit of Madonia", takes the drivers along the tricky and tortuous roads of the island. The event got most popular after 1948 as the competitors list bore the names of the most important representors of racing history: Biondetti, Marzotto, Villoresi, Taruffi, Collins and Gendeblen. Deportago's tragic accident during the '57 Mille Miglia had a considerable impact on the event, which was abolished as a consequence just as other car races held on open roads. |
