Who's That Doll?
JPI FAIRYTALE FAVORITES
1980's 1980's
I don't have a lot of information available about the JPI Storybook dolls.  What I do know is that they were probably produced before Jakks Pacific International came out with their Starr Modeling Agency line of dolls. The female dolls of this line have the same headmolds that JPI later used for the Starr dolls, which were produced in the 1990's. The body style for the females is the same as well --- twist and turn waists, heads that swivel, arms that pivot out from the shoulders, knees that bend and click into position. Hair is rooted on the female dolls, and painted on the males; other facial features are painted on.
The only dolls I've been fortunate enough to own so far are shown below. There were seven sets of dolls, that I've been able to discover, and each set came with a Prince and a Princess doll, taken from popular fairy tales and folk lore.
At left is one of the male dolls. They are jointed, or swivel, at the neck, shoulders, waist and hips. They do not have shoes painted on, but they do have mold marking lines to indicate them. With a bit of persuasion, they can wear Topper Gary's shoes, though each of their costumes came with fabric boots.
All the male dolls used the same face mold.
The sets are: Beauty & the Beast, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood,
Mermaid Princess, Pocahontas, Princess Jasmine, Rapunzel,
Sleeping Beauty and Snow White.
Unfortunately, I do not own complete sets.
Cinderella
Her face mold is the same as JPI's Starr.
Rapunzel's Prince
In these photos, the Mermaid Prince's tan and red boots actually belong to Snow White's Prince, and the black boots he's wearing belong to the
Mermaid's Prince.
Mermaid's Prince
When I first received these two Princes, their clothes had been swapped. The Mermaid's Prince was wearing the green and brown outfit, and Rapunzel's Prince was in the blue and white. That's how I thought they were supposed to be at first, until I did some research and discovered my error.
I swapped them back, but I still think the Mermaid's Prince looks better in the fashion meant for Rapunzel's Prince.
Sleeping Beauty
Her face mold is the same as JPI's Taylor.
Snow White
Her face mold is the same as JPI's Amber.
