| When Topper's Dawn hit the toy shelves in 1970, Mattel had already had many years of success with their Barbie. However, Barbie was going through an identity crisis as more and more little girls were realizing they didn't have to be just wives and mothers anymore. While Mattel floundered, Topper Dawn dolls began outselling Barbie. Quickly, Mattel invented their own answer to the miniature fashion doll market, and produced the RockFlowers. They were hip, trendy, rock superstars. Their fashions were psychedelic tie-dyed prints or fringed, faux leather outfits. Their bodies were fully articulated; the rubbery material contained wires which would allow the doll to be set into just about any position. Unfortunately, these wires would sometimes poke through the rubber bodies at the hands, feet or shoulder. The bodies also tended to get dirty and stain easily. They are hard to clean. The RockFlowers had rooted hair, but not rooted eyelashes, like Dawn. Except for Doug, the only male, they had sunglasses permanently stitched to their heads. Each RockFlower doll came with a record which would actually play on a record-player. One doll case came with a toy microphone and toy speakers, and could be turned out to be used as a stage for the singing group. The RockFlowers had many fashions sold separately--not nearly as many as Dawn--and each fashion set consisted of a series of three outfits; for example, Tie-Dye Bells, Tie-Dye Maxi, and Tall Tie-Dye. |
