Welcome To Red Crescent Dialysis Centre

Human has 2 kidneys and they found in the lower part of our back, one on each side. The kidneys carry out many important functions in our body. What do the normal kidneys do?

Cleaning Function

This is a major function of the kidney. The kidney actually act as filters for your body to clean the blood of wastes, yet retain essential elements needed by the body. It is able to remove waste materials which are produced by the body and these waste materials are passed out in the urine. They are toxic and if allowed to accumulate, will cause illness and eventually death.

Regulating Function

The kidney is able to control the amount of different substances in the body such as water and various salts and mineral. As we know, our body is made up of primarily water. But having too much water in the body can dilute the blood. However, the kidney play a crucial role in helping to maintain the correct volume of water in the body. In addition, the kidney are able to determine the correct concentration of salt that should remain in the blood, and remove any excess.

Hormonal function

The kidney is involved in the production of some important hormones. One such hormone is erythropoietin. It plays a key role in the production of red blood cells in the bone marrow. Red blood cells are important for carrying oxygen to the cells of the body. When the kidney detects that the number of red blood cells in the body is declining, it produces erythropoietin. The kidney also involved in the production of a vitamin D hormone which has important effect on bone.

The most common reasons for people to develop kidney failure is due to Diabetes or High Blood Pressure.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not make any insulin or can't use the insulin it does make as well as it should. If you have diabetes and are not controlling it properly ,sugar will start building up in your blood. If sugar stays in the blood instead of breaking down, it can act like a poison and damage the nephrons in your kidneys .This will reduce the ability of your kidneys to filter out waste products and fluids.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure occurs when the pressure within blood vessels is too high. If you blood pressure is too high it can increase your chance of heart disease, and is dangerous because it often has no symptoms. High blood pressure will damage the small blood vessels in your kidneys and thus prevent the filtering process from working properly.

Prevention

Healthy eating

Healthy eating will help you get the right balance of ,vitamins, minerals and other nutrients.

  • eat healthy foods - with as many fresh ingredients as possible especially eat more fruits and vegetables
  • don't over eat - If you're full, or even simply satisfied, stop eating.
  • eat breakfast -  healthy breakfast can jumpstart your metabolism
  • check nutrition panels on all parceled foods you buy - choose only foods that list a low percentage of sugar and salt and are low in saturated fats.

Monitor blood pressure and cholesterol

You should be tested regularly  to know if you have high blood cholesterol or high blood pressure. That¨s because cholesterol and blood pressure have no warning signs. You should also seek your doctor and  know your physical condition regularly. Lower your blood pressure and cholesterol by eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet low in saturated fats and cholesterol. For example, intake a variety of fruits, vegetables and fat-free and low fat dairy products.

Exercise regularly

Regular exercise is necessary for physical fitness and maintain good health. Exercise helps people lower the risk of some diseases such as heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes and other disease. Exercise is also a key to control weight because it burns calories. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. If you burn off more calories than you take in, you lose weight and have a healthy body.
