Match Report

vs Kellogg Community College.  September 1st 2001

The Lansing Community College Soccer Club began their season on the wrong
foot. The team lost to a more experienced Kellogg Community College squad
5-0 at Kenneth Hope Soccer Complex in Lansing.

The team started off a little flat, allowing two quick first half goals and
seemed to recover after that. "I think it was just the shock of the first
game," said head coach Jorge Gonzalez.

The team pulled together and produced some solid goal scoring chances. "We
had some good opportunities; at least three wide open chances," said
assistant coach Scott Newman-Bale. But it was fitness and organization that
spelled doom for the club, as Kellogg CC put in a few late goals to put the
match out of reach.

Kellogg CC, a division one team, came into the match ranked number three in
the state and fielded eight scholarship players. Kellogg's superior fitness
and teamwork really hurt LCC down the stretch. "They (KCC) practice twice
every day and have a lot of experience playing together," said Newman-Bale.
It is tough for a team like LCC to compete when they are still getting to
know each other. "It's hard to communicate and play with someone you just
met two weeks ago," says Gonzalez.

Poor communication brought about problems during the game. "We had a lot of
careless errors in key situations," said Newman-Bale, "now we can see what
the problems are and we can work to correct them." To correct these problems
the team has made an effort to become more organized at their practices.
Starting goalkeeper, Steve Taylor was promoted to second assistant coach and
the team's practices are more focused on specific areas where improvement is
needed. "With the skill that we have, we could be very good. We just need
time to play together," says Taylor.

Some missing players from the opening match are hoping to be ready for LCC's
next game at Calvin College, Thursday, Sept. 13. Blong Her, the team's
speedy striker, will be back after returning from a tournament in
California. Midfielder Scott Jettie will be on the field after attending a
family commitment.

Captain, Dylan Podleski hopes to be fully recovered from a knee injury
suffered against Kellogg.
