I have been researching my STEMMERMAN and BODE ancestors (My
great-grandparents were Louis STEMMERMAN and Anna BODE). I find that some were
buried in the Amunid (Emmanual Lutheran) Cemetery. The cemetery listing online
has answered many questions, but has left some: (1) The death date for Clara
BODE is listed asl1 May 1911, but she had a child on 22 October 1911 according
to the Zion Lutheran
Church baptismal records. I would like to determine the correct birth and death
dates. (2) There are two unidentified STEMMERMAN burials. I suspect that they
are two children of Louis and Anna who died in infancy: Louis Carl (March, 1885
-May 1885) and Charles Arthur Harry (15 MMarch 1901 -29 May 1901). I would like
to verify this and obtain complete birth and death dates. (3) Wilhemina F. BODE
died in 1956 at the age of 101. I would be interested to find out what her
relationship was to the Louis C. BODE and Anna BODE STEMMERMAN. (4) There is an
unidentified grave for a BODE. Again, I suspect that this is an infant death.
His/her father may have been Louis C . Adolph, Louis M. or Paul. I would like to
get some information on the individual buried here. I will be in Chamberlain in
September and plan to review the newspaper
films at the library; visit the Amunid Cemetery to transcribe and photograph the
tombstones; and visit Wevik Funeral Home. Wevik does not have good records on
early burials (before 1920), so my visit to them will be primarily for the
Wilhemina F. BODE question. Can you provide me with any other resource ideas
that may help my research?_______________________________________________________________________________________________

Researching KUCKELBURG /KUCKLEBURG Both families
came from Holland and Belgium. 1. John Kuckelburg (b. abt. 1860, Belgium,
d. before 1920, Marion, Turner Co., SD) married to Louise DEKING (b. abt.
1862, Holland, d. aft. 1930, Marion, Turner Co., SD). In 1888, John and Louise
Kuckelburg, with their two sons, Peter (5 years) and Charles (3 yeas), came over
to Halls, Iowa, USA from Bieverlot, Holland. Their third child, Emma was born in
Hall, Iowa (the 1900 Census for SD says she was born in South Dakota --not sure
which one is correct). The family later moved to Marion, Turner Co., SD. 2.
Peter Bernard Kuckelburg (b. May 18, 1883 in Holland, d. March 2, 1952 in
Aberdeen, SD) married Clara VOGEL (b. April 8, 1886 in Marion, SD, d. May
3,1969). Peter and Clara had eight children: Irene, Ethel,Raymond, Irvin, Clara,
Lenora, La Vern, and Marie. 3. Charles Kuckelburg (b. 1885, d. ??) --he
never married. I can only find him on the 1900 Census for SD, Turner Co. 4.
Emma Kuckelburg (b. abt. 1892, SO??, d. ??) married to James DONAHUE (b.
abt. 1889, SD, d. ???) My brother-in-law is a great-grandson of Peter
Bernard and Clara Kuckelburg and grandson of Irvin. We do know that there were
several generations of Railroad workers. This is about all we have, with the
exception of pictures.

I am interested in
learning how the town of Kennebec came by its name, when was it first settled ?
I have ancestors with the surname of KENNEBEC(K). I have located some
information at the Lyman County site on line, there seems to have been two
Kennebec families who owned farmland in Kennebec, Range 75/Map26. One was
located in Sec8/40acres and the other was located in Sec17/80acres. Are there
any known descendants of these two families still living in the area ? I live in
the far NE part of IL, McHenry County, which is where my Kennebec(k) ancestors
settled in 1843. They did have family members in Wis. and Minn. after I came
across the town of Kennebec SD, I believe there may be a connection here. Sandie

I'm

1907 in Presho, Lyman, SD to Daniel Bert McFarland and Delana May SEWELL.
Daniel was a photographer in Presho in 1909. Beyond that, I don't know anything;
no dates for Daniel or Delana, no siblings. All I have is Roy's death record (25
Aug 1962 in Clinton, Clinton, Iowa) and the basic facts about his wife, Thelma
Arlene SLAUGHTER. They have a daughter, still living. If anyone knows
about the McFarlands or Sewells I'd be grateful if he/she would share. I'd be
happy to send Roy and his parents’ data.

Looking for information on Oliver
B. (Bert) WARREN. He was granted a land patent in 1908 for about 148
acres in Lyman County. If he homesteaded in this land it was probably between
1903 and 1910. He married Ethel BENEDICT in Dec 1904 in Linton, Emmons
County, North Dakota. The 1910 Census shows him and his family living in
Delmont, Douglas County, South Dakota. I have not found him in the 1900 census
but he would have been 16 at the time and probably living with his parents in
Delmont. Any information appreciated.

I am researching my SLECHTA ancestors. My grandfather,
Joseph Slechta, who moved with his father Henry and mother
Christine YANNA, to a farm five miles south of Kimball when he was a
small boy, around 1884. They later moved to Gann
Valley where Henry ran a general store, HUGHES and SLECHTA. Henry
Slechta's parents, who I believe were named Joseph
and Mary, moved from Wisconsin to a farm near Kimball around 1880, and according
to my grandfather's autobiography, his
grandfather worked his original farm there until he died in 1899. If you have
any information pertaining to the Slechta families (Henry had two brothers, John
and Joseph, who lived near Kimball as well), I would be thrilled to have
it. The early pages of his autobiography have some interesting descriptions of
life in the late 19th century and I would be happy to send you a copy if it
would be of interest to your society. Thank you, Patricia Slechta Cole 12 Meadow Lane Brookhaven, NY 11719.

Dakotas at that time. He is also listed in
the Brule Co., SD -Index to Early Homesteaders though the listing does not offer
a date and I sure love to know when he
started homesteading: (Sobey Wm. 27 Pleasant Grove 101 N 68 W) He is also found
in the 1890 South Dakota Veterans

County, SD p. 002 Ed. 97 ill #
SD1968648 I cannot get hold of the microfilm for the Dakotas in the library I
visit (it has regional to Texas microfilm only)

Her mother was a CAMPBELL. By 1890,
his first two children should have been born and I'm hoping the census listing
will provide Effie's age. John was born in
1888. Will may have been born by then, too. He was the youngest. If anyone has

Benjamin JOHNSON homestead the NW 1/4 of Section 29 in
Township 2 North, Range 29 East (160 acres June 27, 1912, and land patent issued
Oct. 3, 1912. This is about 20 miles NE of Murdo, SD (pretty much between Murdo
and Draper). This area is close to the town of Van Metre -- at that time -- now
a ghost town. Further, Ben sold the land to Andreas (Andrew) Johnson on Mar. 6,
1916, then to JA HOAG in October 1916. Looking at the homestead map, several
Johnsons homesteaded around Ben. These names are: Carrie Johnson west of Ben,
Agnes Marie Johnson directly south of Ben and Andreas Johnson south of Agnes.
Andreas (Andrew). It appears that Ben migrated west with the RR. Kadoka, in
Jackson County, is 40 miles west of Murdo and is the neighboring county west of
Jones County. In the late 1800's, this area (now known as Jones County) was
originally called Pratt, an unorganized county. To the east of Pratt was a small
organized county called Lyman County. Lyman convinced Stanley County (north of
Lyman) and Pratt to consolidate to form one Lyman County. A fight to split went
on for many years until the west half of Lyman County gained enough population
to overcome the "eastern" vote. The split occurred in 1916 and Jones County was
in existence Jan 1, 1917. Most records pertaining to people around there (in the
early days) can usually be found at Kennebec. Jones County records do include
homestead records, but birth, deaths, etc don't begin until 1917. Dale Convey

I just started doing research on my family, and I know my
maternal grandparents, William C. ROESER and Margaret MCKEEVER
were from Kennebec. I think her brother George lived there for many years and
his daughter (?) was a county official (county clerk??). This is all from my own
50+ year-old memory, since my parents and grandparents are all deceased. Anyway,
thanks for giving me another potential lead!!! Joyce Kyce, La Grange Park, IL

Roesers can be viewed in the Lyman County web site's pioneers' photo
album.

I am researching Rachel Elizabeth SPRY who died in
Lyman County in Iona on Sept. 13,1925 according to her death certificate. The
certificate says she lived there for 13 years so I conclude she came there in
1912. She was married to George W. Spry who was a Civil War veteran and died in
Leavenworth, Kansas on June 11, 1908. According to pension records, "Frances
LILLY intermarried with Clarence Lilly". Frances was born about 1906 or
1907. Rachel was born Nov. 20, 1821 according to her death certificate. I
believe she is the same Rachel listed under Spry on your information except that
the date of death does not match up however my Rachel would have been 103 years
old. My Rachel was born in Buck Grove, 11 per her death certificate. I'm also
wondering if the George Spry listed is Rachel's husband? She didn't move to SD
until 1912 but she could have buried her husband there I guess. Thank you.
I appreciate your assistance.

Do you have any info on a newspaper printed in the late
1870's-early 1880's called the Chamberlain Chief! It was printed in Chamberlain
prior to the arrival of the railroad, and for a period of time afterwards. The
owner was Melroy A. FULLER. There were a couple stores, a church, and a
hotel called Pilgers Hotel at the time. Melroy also was hired by the Benedictine
Monks to build the first Indian school at Crow Creek, later called Stephan. The
first permanent priest there was Father WILLARD. Melroy built a Sioux
language printing office at Greenwood; started another newspaper office at
Wheeler in Charles Mix County; returned to the Chamberlain area, then spent
about 10 years teaching carpentry at the Indian school in Lower Brule. He
continued on to start another newspaper in Salem, SD, and then built more
schools. It has all been recorded by Nellie Louise Fuller CAREY, who was
seven years old the first time she set eyes on Chamberlain. One more note: when
the family arrived in Chamberlain to join Melroy, who had gone on ahead, they
lived in a cave temporarily while waiting for Melroy to complete a shanty.
