About us
Origin: Founded in 1987, our society meets the third Monday of every month at 6 p.m. at Cozard Memorial Library in Chamberlain. Open to anyone interested in genealogy and we will conduct a research for those asking. Newsletters are published quarterly and membership is always encouraged.
Mission: Our mission is to gather and preserve genealogical data of the Lyman-Brule County area in order to help anyone and everyone in their quest for researching their family history. Our meetings are held every third Monday night at the Cozard Memorial Library in Chamberlain. Business meeting at 6 p.m. f
ollowed by a program at 7. We will also do genealogical research for anyone requesting us to do so. See our rate chart .Projects:
Publication of "Of Rails and Trails, a centennial journey 1889-1989"; our four hundred and six page book that covers the business, social and family histories of Lyman, Brule and Buffalo counties. $40 + $5 shipping and handling (in USA).
Compilation of cemetery data (by walking through the cemeteries); indexing any genealogical records we can get our hands on; extracting genealogical data from the local newspapers (from 1881-- 1905); creating notebooks of complete obituaries as well as marriage notices, etc. File cards, albums, history books, micro-filmed newspapers, etc., available to the public for research in-house (at the library).
Publication of our Lyman-Brule Genealogical Society Cookbook (our millennium project and fundraiser.) $10 + $4 shipping and handling.
Holding fundraisers (bake sales, Indian taco sales, rummage sales, craft fairs, etc.) to raise money and purchase our new microfilm-reader/printer that is housed in Cozard Library and is available to the public. We have also raised funds to purchase a copy machine for printing our newsletters, indexes, brochures, etc. and have purchased over 100 reels of Lyman and Brule county microfilmed newspapers.
Publish a 12-page quarterly newsletter that is free for exchange with other societies; $3 + .50 cents postage (if ordered and mailed in the U.S.) The newsletter is also available on-line to members who are interested in receiving it that way.
On-going birth, marriage/anniversary, death, obituary collections and indexing. We encourage you to share any Lyman or Brule farm directories, county atlases, record books, anything you may have access to, with us to scan or index for publication on this Internet site for public genealogy research.
