MY CLASS
This section is just for my students that I do not know whose number accounts for the greatest part. An OnLine class is made of students scattered all over the world that don�t know each other and have never seen their teacher. But we communicate every day and we know about us more than if we had met in a conventional way
I teach because I like to teach. So I say because I only teach to those who like to learn.
With every year fewer and fewer people resort to literature.We live in a world which has by far outstripped literature of its poetic role. People merely want to learn a language so as to get by when visiting a foreign country, but only few know what the exploration of a language can give. I�m talking about the study of its genesis, its dialects, the different influences that modify a language In regard of it the study of a language can become a great episode of our culture and it remains a formidable form of workout that we can supply to the brain. Students that like this are the ones I relate best.
Peculiarities about my class
Beginners are not among my scholars. A good 80 % of the class is made by English/American adults. Once they discover that I�m Italian all want to learn my mother language. Both Americans and English prove to have a surprising knowledge of European history and Italian in particular. Their first goal is to be able of reading Dante. But then they settle for something more colloquial, eventually.
Italians have a different approach altogether. They all have studied English in school but none seems to know how to properly use singular in the place of plural. No use of explaining how the 'dead' accounts for the 'deads' and the 'poor' for the 'poors'. But they make a large use of words � la mode, picked up at random, often used in the wrong context. No one in Italy�except for some primitive- would dare use the word �prestazione anymore, the term �performance�s has barged its way into our dictionary. If it were for just few words it�d be pleasant, but as of lately there�s an awful lot of new terminology besieging Bel Paese�s soft language. The moment when push comes to shove is when Italians watch CNN or BBC. In this occasion, no matter how many years they�ve studied the abstruse Nordic language, they can�t understand a word of what they hear, utterly unable to divide words. In that they remind me of those trained dolphins grappling with human emotions which they have understand but whose meaning do not share. During the seminars we spend a great deal of time in front of the TV set listening over and over to the news or to Larry King, or David Letterman.
My lessons on line are based on a frantic exchange of mail. In this case I never get to know my students, although the end up writing a great deal about themselves. I have always liked to hear about other people�s lives. In the end these students end up being like mirrors going down the street.
When summer comes the seminars begin. With scholars in need of work out the lessons take place in the vast pinery in which Charming Ruin lies (CR is how I renamed my premises) and while we prune, shovel and rake, we talk about Durrell, Anais Nin, Nabokov, Dante!
La Mia Classe
Insegno perch� mi piace insegnare. Dico questo perch� insegno solo a quelli che amano imparare. Di anno in anno diminuisce il numero di coloro alla ricerca del ruolo poetico della letteratura in un mondo che sempre di pi� si allontana da una simile dimensione. I pi� vogliono imparare una lingua per potersi arrangiare quando visitano un paese straniero. Non sanno cosa l�esplorazione di una lingua possa dare, la sua genesi , le diverse influenze che la trasformano, i suoi dialetti. L'apprendimento di una lingua � comunque un grande episodio della nostra cultura, un'ottima forma di ginnastica di cui beneficia la mente. Gli studenti che amano questo sono quelli con cui vado pi� d�accordo.
Particolarit� della mia classe.
I principianti non sono fra i miei allievi. Un 80% della classe � composta da Inglesi e Americani in et� adulta. Non prendo principianti Quando scoprono che sono italiano tutti vogliono studiare la mia lingua madre. Quasi tutti, inglesi e americani, hanno una sorprendente conoscenza della storia europea e italiana in particolare. Il loro gran desiderio � di essere in grado di leggere Dante. Ma poi si arroccano su livelli pi� colloquiali.
Gli italiani hanno un diverso approccio alla lingua. Tutti hanno studiato l�inglese a scuola ma nessuno sembra conoscere come usare in modo giusto il singolare al posto del plurale. Non c�� verso di riuscire a spiegare che � morto� sta per �i morti� e �povero� per �i poveri�. Ma fanno tutti un largo uso di parole alla moda, spesso prese a caso, spessissimo usate nel contesto sbagliato. Nessuno in Italia�eccetto forse qualche primitivo - userebbe pi� la parola prestazione. Solo �performance� � consentito. E se fosse solo per alcune parole usate nel posto giusto sarebbe anche piacevole. Purtroppo l�attacco della nuova terminologia anglicana alla dolce lingua del Bel Paese � massiccio e non si pu� che subire. Ma il vero momento in cui gli italiani si sentono smarriti a tu per tu con l�astrusa nordica lingua albionica � davanti ai programmi TV della CNN o della BBC. L�, non importa quanti anni hanno studiato, siedono davanti allo schermo non capendo nulla di ci� che ascoltano, assolutamente incapaci di dividere le parole e, in questo, mi ricordano un po quei delfini ammaestrati che interpretano perfettamente gli insegnamenti del loro domatore, ma non li� capiscono. E cos� gran tempo della lezione scorre quasi sempre davanti alla televisione facendo passare avanti e indietro il nastro di David Letterman o Larry King.
Le lezioni on line sono basate su un convulso scambio di posta elettronica. Di questi studenti non vedo mai i visi, ma poich� scrivono moltissimo di se stessi, alla fine arrivo a conoscere tutto di loro e diventano come specchi che se ne vanno per la strada. Ma a me � sempre piaciuto scoprire le vite degli altri.
Con l�estate cominciano i seminari. I miei scolari sono in maggior parte adulti e molti hanno bisogno di attivit� fisica, per cui le lezioni hanno luogo nella pineta in cui si nasconde Charming Ruin (cos� io chiamo la mia casa) e, mentre potiamo, rastrelliamo e spaliamo, parliamo di Durrell, Anais Niin, Nabokov, Dante!
