| Laylagrove is located in Northern New Jersey, where our dogs live in our home, not a kennel. Our dogs are our family companions first and foremost. Our breeding program has produced Champion and Master Agility Champion Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Our dogs combine beauty and brains with good health. We also breed and home Labrador Retrievers, which we have had since the mid 1970s, and we will always have a Lab. We got our start in Labs with Layla, a wonderful little black female from Washington State. When Layla died in 1986, we were in deep mourning. While waiting for a show prospect to be born, we started helping in all-breed dog and cat rescue. We helped re-home dogs from a kennel that was reducing its population, helping to rescue Cavaliers and rare Cesky Terriers, among others. It was through this effort that we became devoted to our favorites, the all-purpose Labrador Retriever and our new love, the sweet Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Our love for our breeds extends beyond our home: we continue to be actively involved in breed rescue.
While studying pedigrees in the three breeds, we couldn't keep our minds off the dogs needing homes. We eventually started Labradors & Friends rescue in 1993. The Labs that came into our lives were much loved but not show and breeding prospects. We continued to learn more about dog health and behavior, training and competition. I wanted a tricolor female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in the worst way, turning down good dogs in other colors. (I came to realize that color specification was silly!) A lovely Champion Cavalier, Tina, came into our lives in a most fortuitous way, and Tina became our foundation Cavalier. That same year we acquired our first black Labrador pup in years, a sweet little female named Kira. Happy at home, participating in 4-H activities, or socializing with spectators after marching in a St. Patrick's Day parade, Kira is a true ambassador for her breed. Kira has achieved her American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen title (CGC) and has CHIC health clearances, as does her son. Always in the ribbons in competition, Kira has earned a Rally Novice title in three straight shows.
Performance is always in our mind as we select good breeding prospects. A healthy and sound dog is needed for companionship and for long obedience, rally, and agility competition careers. A pretty face is not enough--we need a sound mind in a sound body in our beautiful dogs.
