DWYERS OF BALYQUIRK

DWYERS FROM CLARE/ DUBLIN/ TIPPERARY

This family was once part of the DWYER LAYE website- but until there is definitive proof that this branch is connected our Dwyers,  it should be separate not to mislead. My proof was circumstantial, based on the times being in sync, locale in Ireland, relocation of George Dwyer family to Bengal India, as our Robert Hoare Dwyer. Lastly, there is a similar social status, with the almost exclusive occupation in the military. How many Irishmen named Dwyer are made generals and trusted with cannons by the English? So while there is most likely a connection somewhere the two families need to be separated.      LINK TO DWYERS OF BALYQUIRK

(Ms of letter at BL, London: Dwyer (Henry). Col. of Ballyguith Castle, co. Tipperary. Letter to Sir R. Peel 1846. Add. 40586 f. 62).  Was Aide-de-camp to the Marquis of Hastings.  "General Henry Dwyer who, after serving in the India Mutiny and later as a Civil administrator in the Punjab, where his name still lingers, took a property of about 900 acres in Lorrha on a perpetual lease from the owner, Mr. Worth Newenham, and lived in Ballyquirk Castle till his death in 1869. He left two daughters, who were married in England, and two nephews, John de Burgh and Henry - sons of the Rev. George Dwyer, Rector of Ardrahan, Co. Galway - whom he brought up. By his will he left the property to a cousin, Philip Anthony Dwyer of the Co. Clare and the tenant-right to his nephew, John de Burgh Dwyer. This John de Burgh, who was a man of local influence, died in 1901, leaving his interest in the property to his only daughter, Ella de Burgh Dwyer. When on her way to her relatives in England she was a passenger by the ill-fated S.S. Leinster, which was torpedoed on October 10, 1918. Her body was recovered and is buried at Lorrha. So ended this branch of the family. It has been stated that General Henry Dwyer claimed descent from Philip, the last Chief of Kilnamanagh, but the writer has found no authority for this statement." (From "The O'Dwyers of Kilnamanagh: The History of An Irish Sept" by Sir Michael O'Dwyer, published London, 1933).

Additions and Corrections to the Wellesley Index

June 2004 Edition

Eileen M. Curran

......... For all twelve articles just listed, delete Francis Doyne Dwyer. Add: Author not identified. These articles are not included in the three detailed lists of articles provided by Dwyer and his widow to the Royal Literary Fund, the first two by Dwyer in 1869 and 1872 and the last by his widow in 1881. On 19 Jan. 1881 his daughter Anna described her fathers literary career: He contributed for many years to Frazer and to the United Service Magazine. Also crucial articles to the Cornhill and Blackwood magazines. He was military correspondent to the Observer for some time. He contributed for several years to the Naval and Military Gazette and occasional articles to the Imperial Review Dark Blue Dublin University magazine and the Broad Arrow. That occasional articles should rule out the long list of DUM articles Wellesley ascribes to him--all articles dealing with the Crimean War. As Wellesley correctly notes, Dwyer wrote about military affairs--but only about conflicts involving Austrian or Prussian forces. During the 1850s Dwyer served as a major in the Imperial Austrian Army, published German-language military manuals in Vienna, contributed to the Darmstadter Militr Zeitung for nearly twenty years [from about 1853 to 1872] besides occasional articles to other German military papers; he did not write again for British periodicals until 1859.

Links between some articles in the above group most likely indicate a conscientious editor or sub-editor; they do not point to Dwyer as the author.
