Tectonic Plates
Tectonic plates are the sub-surface ground areas that are constantly moving. It is like pushing your hands together, the pressure your hands feel is like the pressure buildup in the earth, although when the pressure gets great enough they split and cause the release of enormous amounts of energy that fly towards the surface of the earth. Fault lines are lines where most of earth's earthquakes originate. (See Picture on home page for all major fault lines in the world) There are three types of tectonic plates: divergent, convergent and transform. Divergent plate boundaries are when the two seams along the plate are moving away from each other. Convergent plates are two plates coming together and hitting each other. Transform is when two plates are moving side by side.
