Varuna de Silva - Few lawyers think about giving back to society a little of what society so generously give to them in terms of knowledge, wealth, honour, prestige and status. Book writing is not a particularly lucrative venture in a developing country with no developed structures for the protection of intellectual property. Lawyers who write books, especially legal books in developing countries usually do it, not to get wealthy from the sales thereof, but to share their knowledge with those who are desperately in need of such knowledge but are unable to get it because they cannot afford or even access it. In a developing country, Judges, civil servants, students and even teachers are some of the categories of people who need knowledge but are not always in a position to buy or even access that knowledge from the traditional sources. When lawyers like Ajithaa write legal texts they do it with such people in mind. They want to make legal knowledge available to those who need it most at a price they can afford. This means that the book is usually priced below its true value. Ajithaa has chosen not to take the knowledge society bestowed on her to the grave when her time on earth finally expires. She has elected to leave it behind for posterity to inherit, in many cases at no cost at all. Such selflessness does not go unrewarded.
