LAVATORY RATS
SIDE PROJECTS

In addition to Lavatory Rats, I have made some recordings under the name DJ Can't-Scratch and as Richard Heck.

DJ CAN'T-SCRATCH
Last updated: January 9, 2009

DJ Can't-Scratch is an experimental "electronica" project I've dabbled with over the years. Around late 1998/early 1999, I started getting into artists such as Lesser, Kid606, and Disc. I was intrigued by the possibilities of electronic music based around digital glitches. I thought about incorporating some skipping CDs into Lavatory Rats recordings. It turned out, however, that the results of my experimentation stood well enough on their own. The tracks were certainly not Lavatory Rats material, so I associated them with the name DJ Can't-Scratch. The moniker comes from the fact that I indeed can’t scratch. However, I decided that even if I could scratch, I would never use turntables for this project.

In 2003, I recorded two gabber techno tracks using some basic drum machine software. However, I no longer consider them part of my work as DJ Can't-Scratch. I'm not a fan of using computers to make music, so to have done it myself is contradictory. Moreover, I much preferred the glitch material I had recorded, and those experiments were the essence of DJ Can't-Scratch.

In June 2005, I recorded a number of real-time improvised "remixes" of hip-hop/R&B/dance tracks that were on a mix CD that I had found. It was quite an interesting experience, as I had never heard most of the songs that I reworked. There was no information on the mix CD, and afterwards I had to look up the tracks online to find out what they were. Since then, I haven't done anything with DJ Can't-Scratch, except create a MySpace profile in March 2006. However, I do not intend to consider the project defunct any time soon. I plan to release some CD-Rs eventually.

RICHARD HECK
Last updated: January 9, 2009

Richard Heck is the nom de plume that I use for all my music projects. The name Richard Heck is a parody of punk legend Richard Hell. There's no particular rhyme or reason as to why I chose the moniker, it just popped into my head one day. I think it is appropriate, however, since using a name that has an air of levity to it reflects that fact that I don't take my music projects too seriously. This is not to suggest that it's all a big joke, but it is supposed to be fun.

Richard Heck "solo" material is anything that does not fit the style of Lavatory Rats or DJ Can't-Scratch. To date, I have never actually set out to make Richard Heck recordings; what exists has been culled from Lavatory Rats sessions. I created a Richard Heck MySpace profile in January 2008 and posted some of this material. I plan to release some CD-Rs eventually.
