If one wished to see Bharata Muni's Natya Sasthra personified, one had only to witness the exhilarating dance recital by Lavanya Prabu on February 19,2000 at the Wilhelmina Cullen Auditorium at the University of Houston. Lavanya excelled as an artiste of superior caliber with her subtle dance movements, perfect mudras and facial expressions.

Lavanya's lithe frame reminds one of Kalidasa's description of Malavika, who is said to possess a body eminently suitable for dancing. It was a pleasant experience to see Lavanya rising to her peak performance in rendering the varnam with an untiring exhibition of her dancing skills and mastery of the nuances of the art . Her footwork, hand gestures and leg movements were facile, announcing that she was on the crest of her skill and form.

Lavanya has been under the tutelage of Smt. Rhadha for many years now and has performed in many places. Lavanya has the perfect form and figure that is suitable for a dancer. The highlight of her show was the recital of "Senthil mevum Deva Deva', a varnam composition by Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman, set to

Taal Aadi. She was able to showcase her Guru's talent while retaining her individuality as well. All the aspects of adavus, jathis, theermanam, abhinayas, kaalappraamanam, and sanchari bhava were commendable. Her lithe movements brought to mind the swaying of a tendril in gentle wind. I almost felt like I had danced with her when she danced the Kaavadi Chindhu "Chenni kula nagar vaasan".

The "Devar munivar" composition of the renowned violonist Sri. Lalgudi Jayaraman, was performed as the varnam piece of the dance recital. The nritham and abhinaya parts of the varnam were both performed as elegant as the artiste's name itself suggests. Her adavus were perfect in the nritha portion of the varnam. Her hand mudras and facial expressions in the abhinaya part of the recital distinguished her as an accomplished danseuse.

An attractive face, perfect figure and lithe body movements and the ability to utilise the entire stage space for dancing are Lavanya's special traits. Her expressions and poses are both natural and graceful and enhance the

quality of her performance. Her portrayal of Lalgudi jayaraman's "Devar Munivar" varnam, based on the raga Shanmuga priya, captured the young artiste's devotion and dedication to the art. Lavanya danced the varnam, which lasted about 40 minutes, without any dull moments in it and kept the rapt attention of the audience throughout. The credit goes to Smt. Rhadha, the artiste's Guru, who has done a commendable job in preparing her student to this stage.
