Dissertation Summary:

“Parent-Child Imagery in Hosea” is an exploration of the Family customs behind the imagery of Israel as God’s child in Hosea. The paper examined maternal status (“children of whoredom,” Hos 1.2) in the Hebrew Bible (HB), through the anthropological concept of “complementary filiation.”  Marriage and legitimacy are explored in relationship to bridewealth customs in the ancient Near East (ANE), the HB, and in preindustrial cultures (through anthropological studies).  Adoption and disownment customs in the ANE are investigated to provide background for the disownment and adoption imagery in Hos 1, 2, and 11. A careful examination of Hosea 1-2 reveals that in these chapters God’s bride is the land.
