MALACHI – Survey and Conclusions
MALACHI 1-3
Themes linking with Hosea: YHWH as father, false worship, false repentance, “seed of God” not produced, community faithlessness, threats and appeals, etc.
CONCLUSION
OF MALACHI and THE SCROLL OF THE TWELVE
1) Call to repent (3.6-7), disobedience and resistance to Mourning/repentance rituals (3.14-15, cf. Zech 1.2-6)
2) Response: YHWH notes those who fear, “scroll of remembrance” written, God spares as father (3.16-18)
Content: Link with “Remember the Torah of my servant Moses” (3.22[4.4])= Scroll of the Twelve? (Nogalski)
Role of prophets: proclaim torah of Moses, words often written on scroll & read at assemblies of repentance to restore people, land, vegetation (Jer 36.4-8 [Hos 8.12 & Hab 2.2-3?]; Zech 7.1-14 [cf. 1.3-6]; 2 Kgs 17.13-18; 2 Chron 7.12-14; Ezra 9.5-10.1; Neh 9.1-37; Dan 9.3-19; cf. Ezek 2.10).
3) Final warning concerning Day (MT): Elijah to restore intergenerational respect needed for long life on the land (Mal 3.23-24[4.5-6], for MT context of torah recited in cult & taught in home see Deut 32:44-47, cf. 5.16).

“Land,” with “Scroll, Torah of Moses my Servant, & Remember,” link the end of Malachi 3 and the Book of the Twelve with Joshua 1, forming an inclusio with the beginning and end of the Nebi’im.
