ATV Wheel Load |
next |
A number of experienced travelers have expressed their consern about possible overloading of the ATV trailer wheels. Several people have advised that the load looks to be too heavy for the wheels on this small trailer and may result in the failure of the rims, tyres or bearings, out in the desert where breakdowns can lead to disaster. In order to settle the weight question, I put one wheel on the bathroom scales and found that it weighed 45kg. This doesn't seem excessive to me, given the weight of a wheelbarrow full of concrete. The more important issue may be speed. However, I've taken the loaded ATV and trailer on some practice rides with no problems, moveing along at up to 45k/h and consistently at around 20k/h to 30k/h. These are the speeds I expect to travel at, on the ATV, out in the desert. It appears that the wheel bearings will not overheat at this speed and weight combination. Getting sand in the bearings of the ATV trailer wheels is of greater consern to me.
