Chapter 5 :

***
Cady's teeth chattered as she and Gorion walked through the woods and it wasn't because it was cold. She was scared stiff and the only thing that kept her from screaming was Gorion's presence.

She occasionally glanced at her foster father as they walked, his face was tense and a frown creased his forehead. She hated seeing him like that, it meant something was very wrong.

"Let's hurry child, it'll be dark soon and we must find shelter before then," Gorion said.

Gorion looked at her face underneath her hood and his features softened.

"Don't worry," he said when he noticed the worried look on her face "I'll explain everything when there is time"

Cady briefly looked around her only to find herself bumping into Gorion, who had stopped walking.

"There is something wrong, prepare yourself Cady, we are in an ambush" Gorion stated.

Cady wildly looked around her to see what was Gorion was talking about when a heavy and low voice boomed out. She very nearly yelped when she saw the huge armored man standing there.

"You are perceptive for an old man, you know why I'm here. Hand over your ward and no one get's hurt" the man's voice boomed.

Cady cringed at the sound but stood her ground, Gorion was with her so she would be safe. Gorion stood tall and proud in front of the warrior.

"You are a fool to think I would trust your benevolence, step aside and you and your lackies will be unhurt" Gorion said firmly.

"I'm sorry you feel that way old man" the large warrior sneered.

Cady jumped at the sound of a female voice, a woman about her size was standing close by the warrior chanting a spell. Cady hadn't noticed the woman before and she didn't get the chance to ponder it as a missile struck her in the arm.

"Run child, get out of here" Gorion said.

"But Gorion..." Cady protested.

"Don't argue with me, go" Gorion ordered.

Cady took one last look at the battle and then ran for her life. When she reached the bushes she turned around to see what was happening and she was just in time to see Gorion go down.

"Noooo" Cady yelled, tears stinging her eyes.

The armored man turned to her and when she saw him stepping towards her she turned around and ran as fast as she could, sobbing all the way. When she reached a dirt path she finally stopped running and collapsed to the ground where she proceeded to throw up.

She wretched and dry heaved for a while until her stomach calmed down and then all that was left was wails and sobs. Instinctively rather then consciously she crawled into a bush and laid herself to rest, the darkness forgotten.
