Chapter 1 :
***
"Cadence, Imoen where are you?" Phlydia called.

Phlydia sighed as she looked across the courtyard in front of the grand Candlekeep library. She had promised Gorion she would take care of his foster children while he was away but she found that it was easier said than done. She knew the two human girls had to be near by somewhere.

"Girls, Gorion is going to be very upset if you don't do your homework" Phlydia tried.

Still no answer. A small smile crept onto Phlydia's face as she sighed loudly and said:
"Oh well, I guess I'm going to have to eat all this candy by myself"

As she had expected a loud noise came from somewhere but instead of two, only one girl came sailing out of a tree.
"Candy, candy, candy..." Imoen stopped and looked at Phlydia's hands "Hey, where's the candy?"

"Imoen, where's Cadence?" Phlydia asked.

"Cady is trying to lose weight so she doesn't want any candy" Imoen replied evasively.

"Lose weight?" Phlydia asked in disbelief "Where is she?"

"I don't know" Imoen said a little too quickly.

"Imoen..." Phlydia said.

"I promised I wouldn't tell" Imoen said quickly, putting her fingers in her ears "Wont tell, wont tell, wont tell"

Phlydia could see that she wasn't getting anything out of Imoen but now she was getting worried. Cadence was known to get into trouble easily, she searched for trouble for the most part.
***
Cadence, in the mean time, was indeed in trouble, although she didn't realize it herselfyet. She was on her hands and knees crawling up the stairs, towards the floor where Ulraunt's office was.So far she hadn't been seen and she was determined to keep it that way.

Gorion had warned Cadence about her stealing but this time it was justified, justified because what she was stealing had been hers until Ulraunt had taken it away. It was a small bracelet that she always had on and Ulraunt had taken it as punishment for breaking a vase. Cady had now decided that taking the bracelet back would be easy, she was a rogue after all.

She was gunning for the top right drawer in Ulraunt's desk, that's where he put the last item he stole from her and that was probably where he put this one. Much later she would wonder why she didn't just wait until Ulraunt was gone but as it was Cadence waited until Ulraunt had his back turned towards and then silently crept into his office and hid behind the desk.

When Ulraunt walked around the desk, so did she and he didn't see her. When Ulraunt turned away to get a book from the bookcases, Cadence moved towards the drawer. She quietly opened it and peeked in, she smiled as she saw the bracelet and had to stifle a chuckle.

This was almost too easy. Cadence startled when one of the library monks came in and she almost yelped. She managed to hide behind the desk but it was no use. Ulraunt walked around the desk and the monk was standing on the other side, she was locked in.

Cadence did the only logical thing, she took her chances with the monk. She quickly and silently crawled to the other side of the desk in plain view of the monk and waited for him to tell Ulraunt. Much to her surprise, the monk didn't say a word about her, in fact...he didn't even look at her although it was obvious that he had seen her.

Ulraunt and the monk finished their business and the monk walked off without looking at Cadence. Once Ulraunt had turned away again, Cadence snuck out of the office and down the hall, to the stairs. She went down the stairs and all the way to the first floor, getting many suspicious glances from the monks.

They probably think I'm gonna burn the library down or something, Cadence thought with a giggle.

When she got to the first floor, she ran into the monk who had helped her.

"Hey, thanks for not telling on me" Cadence enthused.

The monk turned towards Cadence and for a moment she thought he would scold her or ridicule her in some way but he didn't.

"That's quite alright, child. Between you and me, I don't like the old bugger much myself. Now run along before you get caught" the monk said.

Cadence smiled and nodded. She ran out of the library at full speed, colliding rather harshly with the person coming into the library. Both Cadence and the person in front of her landed on the floor with a loud thud.

"Cadence" Phlydia cried.

"Hi Phlydia, Hi Imoen" Cadence greeted cheerfully, although she was rubbing her head.

"Hey Cady" Imoen said, from where she was standing in the doorway "Did you get it?"

"Get what?" Phlydia asked.

Imoen clasped her hand over her mouth as Cadence threw her a murderous glance.

"Nothing" Imoen blurted.

"Yeah" Cadence said, moving her sleeve to cover the bracelet "Nothing"
