Each and every one of us can help protect the oceans - even if we're not the CEO of a big company or the head of a powerful committee. By spreading the word, volunteering in action groups, helping to clean up beaches, and contributing as much as you can to legitimate organizations that are focused on the cause, we can work towards a cleaner, healthier, safer ocean.
Lessen Nutrient / Waste Dumping
Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th century, the acidity of the ocean has risen by 30%. Experts predict that by the end of the 21st century, the ocean's acidity will have increased by 150%. If we can cut down on sewage, agriculture, and other wastes that dumped into the ocean, we can slow the increase in acidity.
Lower Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Another reason why the ocean's acidity has been increasing is the higher amount of CO2 emitted today, which also affects global temperatures. The ocean levels are rising due to melting ice caps and some marine species are suffering from warmer water temperatures. Cut the CO2, and perhaps we can stop this.
