| SYNOPSIS A17year old named Sabrina and her mom, Joan, find themselves homeless and broke. They visit several shelters in Seattle, WA, only to learn they have no room. Without any supporting family members in the area to turn to, they fall asleep under the freeway over pass. Joan plummets into a deep depression, turning to alcohol and prescription drugs to numb the pain of the past. Sabrina is desperate to provide food and shelter for her and her mom, thus, she takes a job as a dancer at a strip club. She meets a handsome and powerful man named Greg. Greg's exciting and expensive life style entices the lonely and fearful girl. But, at the same time, she wants to be faithful to God and herself by remaining a virgin until marriage. As things continue to spiral out of control she begins to doubt God's love and becomes torn between the two worlds. |

| EXCERPT A Moth In The Darkness Written by Laura Dahl SCENE 1 Mid-September 2001. Seattle, Washington. Once upon a time, inside Seattle city limits, a conventionally pretty seventeen year old and her mother sit on a bench; both in rags and wearing bruises and cuts on their faces. Cold, Dark A bench under a street-light. (Hear funeral music in the background) JOAN It started, wed better go inside. (Pause) Sabrina, he was your father. (Pause) Have a little respect for the dead. Are you coming or not? SABRINA I guess. Lights out SCENE 2 JOAN standing alone at the podium in the funeral room. JOAN (Silence) The first time I saw Darryl was when I noticed him looking at me. I couldnt believe that of all the girls at the high school dance, he wanted to dance with me. He was brilliant, charming and an extremely attractive man. I always felt privileged to be wanted by him. We started dating and I fell quickly in love with him, then six months later we got married and had two beautiful daughters. Like every couple, we had our good times and bad times. He taught our children about gun safety. Darryl was the best father that he knew how to be. We are all going to miss him very much. But tonight, were not saying goodbye, were only saying, until we met again. May God have mercy on him and may he finally have the peace he so desperately craved. Lights Out SCENE 3 On the bench again. JOAN I dont know what to do anymore. SABRINA Lets go home. JOAN Theres a married couple coming out to look at the house tomorrow. SABRINA What, why? JOAN Dad had a lot of debt that I have to take care of. SABRINA And so, youre just going to sell the house? Ill get a job and help out with the bills. JOAN And give up your dream of becoming an actress? When the house sells, I'll put some of your belongings away in a deposit box and leave you the key. But the rest of the stuff will have to either be sold to pay off Darryls debts or dumped. SABRINA Debts? What kind of debts? (Pause) Lights out |
