Pilot

"Just call them the Committee."

Opening scene, and Syd is on the roof of a building with her TelCal partner Cooper. It's obvious they're attracted to each other but Syd is too nervous to say anything. We learn she is alone in the city - no family. At her apartment, Syd uses her ramshackle computer to test a basic bitmap VR programme, whilst chatting to her closest friend Duncan. The next day she wakes to find her car is blocked in by her landlord, making her late for work. Once arriving back home, she again goes into her VR system but is interupted by a phonecall from her angry landlord. Accidently putting the phone reciever down onto her modem, Syd drags both of them into a surreal, yet realisitc VR simulation - Vr5 - in which her landlord has his car steamrollered, then climbs aboard a bus populated by insane people and driven by a blind guy. Syd 'wakes up' and Duncan asks what she was doing, said it only lasts a few minutes. Syd is confused, tries to put the phone down again but no connection - so she gets Duncan to go up to his roof and use his phonebooth to call her. Taking them both into Vr5, Syd 'dreams' of a scene in which she is taking a shower with Dunca - but Duncan changes into Cooper. The next day, her landlord is being all nice suddenly, and Syd believes she has somehow altered his concious through his subconcious. She meets Cooper at work and agrees to a date, then goes to find someone who knows more about VR. Her first encounter with a pioneer in the field is not what she expects, so she goes to an 'old master,' - Dr. Frank Morgan. Initially he brushes her off with a lecture in philosophy, but warns her to destory the machine. Syd doesn't listen, so nervous about her upcoming date that she decideds to try it out first in Vr. Initially the encounter is exactly how she pictures it, up on Lookout Point, but then Cooper turns nasty, and she she's all his previous bodies. Disturbed by the image, Syd looks into his past and discovers he's had a range of jobs - and a range of girlfriends, and even a wife, who all died. Syd goes back to Dr. Morgan and tries to explain her fears, saying she can't be sure what's real and what's not, but again he is little help. After investiagting the area of Lookout Point with Duncan, Syd decides to give the date a try, but sure enough Cooper goes after her and knocks her unconcious. She wakes up to find him digging a grave, starts to run, tripping over his previous bodies then hitting him over the head, possibly killing him. She continues to run out into the street, where a car pulls up and she is dragged inside by Dr. Morgan. Morgan assures her that Cooper will be dealt with, and that the people he works for are interested in Syd's work. Would she like to join them . . ?
