Seoul Riot, cont...
A number of masked students marched up to the line of serious-looking riot police, and after a few minutes of shaking fists, and empty threats, about a hundred of the students layed down in the street, ending the chances of any odd vehicle trying to make a break for it.
The chants went on for another hour or two, and things seemed to be calming a bit, so my friend and I went in search of some answers.
We met another foreigner, who turned out to be a special intelligence officer for the U.S. Army, who was designated to observe these "weekly" riots.
Seeming unimpressed by the activity, he told us that the Koreans were protesting the sale of  Korean car company, Daewoo, to General Motors.  Essentially, the rioters wanted the Korean government to buy the ailing company, and keep the Daewoo solely owned and operated by Koreans.
Somewhere around 6 p.m. all hell broke lose, as the crowd became more unruely, and decided to start throwing rocks, boards and anything else that wasn't bolted down.  I quickly ducked into a telephone booth, to escape the huge rush of protestors that were running towards and from the riot police, like the tide.  It was from inside the booth that I took the action shots around this text.  It didn't appear that anyone was hurt during this event, but it was definitely the exhilarating day we had set out to find.
