| The temples of Angkor date back to the 9th through 12th centuries, when the Khmer Empire ruled much of what is now modern day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos and southern Vietnam. To reach these magnificent ruins that rival the pyramids of Egypt or Machu Pichu, I took a fast boat from Phnom Penh up Tonle Sap Lake to the small colonial town of Siem Reap. |

| Although ruins from the Angkorian era can be found throughout much of southeast Asia, the ruins outside of Siem Reap contains over thirty temples and monuments built in what was the capital city of the Khmer empire.
