Most bands would probably have no idea what to do if they lost their lead singer. It would have been very easy and perfectly understandable for the rest of Joy Division's members to throw in their musical towels.  However, amazingly they decided to regroup, spawning one of the most successful spin off bands in music history.

New Order formed after the death of Ian Curtis.  Bernard Sumner took over on vocals and played guitar as he had done in Joy Division.  Steve Morris and Peter Hook continued to play drums and bass respectively.  Steve's girlfriend, Gillian Gilbert was brought in to play keyboards and guitar
At first, many thought that New Order could never surpass the days of Joy Division.  However, the group started experimenting with new computer technology, adding synthesizers and sequences to their sound.    Then came the song Blue Monday, which would become the best selling 12" single of all time.  That's right kids. Blue Monday is a New Order song, not an Orgy one.  People loved the futuristic dance beats, the light melody, and the thoughtful vocals  All these elements attracted a wide variety of fans, including what Bernard said were "spotty students and football hooligans.

In 1986, the band released the album Brootherhood featuring two of their greatest hit songs
Bizarre Love Triangle and True Faith, a song produced by the Pet Shop Boys.
