DEFTONES! God, where do I even start with these guys. Besides The Cure, Deftones have meant more to me than any other band Ive ever heard. My love for Deftones is different than my love for The Cure, though. While the Cure's music has been therapeutic for me, Deftones' music has opened more doors for me than I could ever imagine. I really love telling the story of how I got into Deftones. When I was 16, I was friends with this guy named Drew. Drew was just six days older than I was, but he thought he knew everything about good music. At this time I was pretty much only listening to The Cure, Bush, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Drew didn't care for my music, especially the Cure. He liked much harder stuff like Rage Against the Machine, Soulfly, Pantera, KoRn, and Metallica. Metallica was his favorite band, and he really loved KoRn. Along with these bands, he used to rave about Deftones and how amazing they were. I really didn't take notice to them. Since Drew didn't seem to want to expand his mind to my type of music, I wasn't interested in his. However, whenever we talked on the phone, he'd always have something loud playing in the background. Since we were always on the phone, I grew to like some of his loud music, Soulfly and KoRn in particular. And even though I was starting to like some of his music, he would still tease me about the bands I listened to. He picked on The Cure the most. He called Robert Smiths all kinds of names, and said that he couldn't sing. He also said that The Cure were just 80s hasbeeens. I of course took offense to all of that. Even though I thought Drew was totally awesome I knew he had to be completely fucked up in the head to not understand and totally fall in love with what the Cure did musically. But what could I do? He was entitled to his opinion. So I jus left it alone

One Saturday, I was watching The Week In Rock on MTV. On that particular day, they aired a segment on Deftones. I decided to watch the segment, just out of curiosity. About half way through the interview I heard something so amazing and wonderful, that it turned me onto Deftones almost immediately. Kurt Loader said The band's dynamic sound has drawn comparisons to heavy acts like the Bad Brains, Rage Against The Machine, and Korn; yet some of the band's major influences may come as a surprise. Then Chino said, The new wave influence to me was bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode, and stuff that blew my mind when I was young. Those are people who taught me how to sing. I actually met Robert Smith the other day and I actually told him that. And he was like huh? He just watched us play and he said Hmmm... like he didn't hear it. My word! Chino Moreno, a Cure fan, I just couldnt believe it. I thought it was wonderful! Most guys wont even admit to liking bands like that, but here Chino was saying that Robert Smith taught him to sing! I almost died. I figured that if Chino had enough sense to like great bands like The Cure and Depeche Mode, I should give his band a shot
Around the Fur was the newest album so I decided to get that one. I remember going to Best Buy to get it, and finding a completely empty spot where the Deftones CDs were supposed to be. I was upset because I had come all that way, just to get Around the Fur and I didnt want to go home empty handed. I went up to the counter and got some punk looking guy to help me. I asked if there were anymore Around the Fur CDs and he said that he had remembered seeing one earlier in the day. He walked over to the CDs and looked around. He actually found one copy hidden behind Cheap Trick. Well I hope no one else wanted that CD. Sucks if someone hid it to come back for it later. Oh well, not my problem. Haha. When I first got the CD, I mostly listened to My Own Summer (Shove it) and Around the Fur. Im dumb and I never listen to an entire CD when I first get it. It was definitely different from what I was used to. So much screaming! But after awhile, I really started to like it. Eventually I listened to the other songs on the CD as well. I thought Chino's voice was really incredible, and their music had a nice groove to it. But the best thing about my newfound interest in Deftones was that Drew could never rag on the Cure again.
