Michael, wanting to paint Churchill with snow, because of the beauty that the snow adds to the seen, decided to create a seen where horses were running around the track. Only he knew that there were never horses running through the snow at Churchill, so in his inspiration ghost horses came into mind.
Michael would say, "These are the great horses that have ran here in the past that I have painted and not just images of horses. If you compare Secretariat's face markings to the lead horse's face in the print....they match."
