Brief History of the Wesley Roman Catholic Church
(Miss Judith Hypolite)

The present Building named in honor of Our Lady under the title of “The Assumption” began on March 8th 1917 and was completed and blessed on Tuesday 18th December 1918  by the then Ordinary of the Diocese His Lordship Bishop Phillip Schelfhaut C.ss.R (1902-1921).

The church was built under the tutelage of Fr. Jean-Baptist Barreau F.M.I. who served as parish priest from 1913-1952, he died one year later. Not satisfied with the church’s location and to cater for a fast growing population, Fr. Barreau negotiated and succeeded in true barter form with some neighbours giving the land of the (then) existing church building for the present site.

A shrewd skilled mason; carpenter; and architect, he was second to none in getting this majestic Roman style church built here in the northeastern section of our island.

Fr. Barreau was ably assisted by a local craftsman Clifton Prince who helped in innumerable ways adding final finishing touches to the building including the altar rails and many of the lattice work.

With the advent of the convening of the 21st ecumenical council commonly known as the ‘second Vatican council,’ a number of internal structural changes were made and changes continues to be done to reflect the era that we live in.
